Look what they found in a spawning tributary to the Sacramento this fall....

"Salmon survey crew recovered this GIANT (dead) King on Battle Creek a tributary of the Sac. Weight was estimated at 85lb based on length and girth measurements according to the report."

The reported length was nearly 51 inches and would have gone 85# by a length-girth formula

I just back-calculated the girth on that beast based on the fNp divisor of 740 [ (L x G x G)/740 = WT ].

That some beach would've been 35" around!

Nice work Doc!

I fish that exact water most years,
I've hooked fish that just laid down Like a submerged log, you gain a foot then they take two back.

Typically the biggest fish of the year on the Sac are the "late fall run" starting about now through late December.

Here is a 60+ pounder a lady friend of mine caught a few years ago.

Gawd I miss fishing up there.

Every year up here we get a few that cross over the 100lb barrier.
I actually talked to a nameless biologist from a river that said he found a carcass that had 2 cutplug set ups in it's mouth...pig was taped out at 109lbs....F#%&ING HUGE!
The largest I saw sport caught last year was 68lbs....that thing was big enough

Wow! Could you imagine standing in that creek and seeing that thing coming at you like a land shark.

I too thought that was a little short for a 85# fish. Back in about '88 I caught a 63" King on the Columbia that I estimated at around 70 lbs. (guess it could have been more) Caught it from the bank and fought it for just under an hour before it swam (not laid over) a little too close to the bank and my brother got a landing net in front of it's head. Never weighed it just ate it - had huge layers of meat and fat. Thing didn't even look real when we got it up on the bank. This was before digital cameras and the internet so didn't make much a deal about it except with my regular fishing buddies who came over to the house to take a look before I carved it up. The belly walls on that thing were as thick as I've ever seen on a fish and yes, they smoked up just fine. Caught 54 and 59 inch fish that same year. Now I'd trade them all for their offspring.

Cool big fish, however I am skeptical of pretty much anything JD prints.
