I am learning about this type of fishing but would love to get a little more info. What are some poplular lures for these fish. Also, do you guys run flashers?

Thanks

I like to run hoochies or spoons behind a hotspot flasher to find active fish. I'm fishing off the 'rigger 110-250ft water, towards bottom. Cup faced and shovel nose plugs work well at times.
Popular colors are glow white/green markings when they are feeding on squid here early in the season. As the forage fish come to spawn the shape seems to dictate what is the hot lure. Last year the 3.0 wonderbread coyote or UV green coho killer outfished my regular colors. :two cents:

Funky Chicken 3.5 spoon with no flasher has always worked well for me.

Yup, the funky chicken, army truck, and the cop car are top of the list. Just saying what worked better for me last year.

thanks guys! Sounds like your fishing REALLY deep. Is a down rigger required?

Last year my best combo was a 3" knight ryder (glow cop car) coyote behind a dodger.

All above suggestions are great. I'd add useing a double glo Ace-hi Fly, Hoochie and a Herring strip for searching for fish. Cut-plug Herring once you've found them.

If you dont have downriggers, just mooch or motor mooch Herring. Use a Metzler sliding weight, typically 4 or 6 oz., and a 60-72 inch leader to a double-hook solid-tie mooching rig. Put your gear out to within 20 feet of the bottom and put the boat in and out of gear to raise your bait, then let it drop back into the zone.

Good luck! thumbs

Jiggen Pt Wilson darts and Dungeness Stingers works great. color Green and white or plain white, using 7 1/2 or 8' fairly stiff rod with no stretch line and a mono leader

i almost always use plugs for blackmouth. i'd rather not have a flasher hanging on my line when i'm fighting fish of that size,(typically 5-8 lbs). I also believe I have to deal with far fewer shakers when I use a 4 or 5 inch plug.

The downrigger is not a requirement. But it is nice to bring a fish to the boat without the addition of weight on the line.

anything you can do to stick close to the bottom, or in the bait...i think it changes what lures are hot each year, i love hootchies...last year i caught more on metal, i was scrambling a little cause my hootchies were not producing as much as the hardware...it will change IMHO from year to year, but glow and green always seam to produce...c

I like herring too but where I fish the flounders would make me use at least 2 dozen per rod per day. I'm too tight for that
