Been super happy with the 1263. Awesome for steel and silvers, even kings to mid-twenties in slower water. Haven't fished the 1264 but would imagine the extra power could come in handy for heavy fish/conditions.

Only complaint is the weight of the rod. Holding it high when fishing floats all day makes my wimpy arms tired sometimes. An IMX model could be cool. Probably wouldn't consider a Gl2 for action/weight reasons.

or

You can spend $300 - 600 for a Loomis or Lamiglas rod, 13'...couple that with a Stratic 2500 reel, EBAY price $110 - 189, same braided line, leader, bobber/float, some good jigs in 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 oz.......go fishing!!!!!

I've fished with 9.5', 10.5' and 13'........all are fun but I really like my 3 piece, 13' Lamiglas.......NOT A BOAT ROD!!!!!

the 13' lami is a sweet rod and perfect float rod imo. i personaly fish a 13'6" 4-8lb okuma guide select. its alot softer then the 13' lami but its a sweet light float rod.

my main float rod is a 10' 4-10 custom allstar. it fishes more like a 6-10 and is well balanced with 8lb mainline and throwing golfball sized cork round floats.

ive fished 1265's and 1263's both rods are nice, also dont over look the redington 10' 6-10 and 8-15 both rods are nice float rods.

counter weight your float rods guys. it will make a huge difference when holding that rod tip up all day. i use to get tired arms after just a couple hours of long cast and mending. but this season with a counter weight i have yet to have that problem.

i use 1 1/2oz for a 10'6" rod and it makes it nice and light in the tip.

Counter weight eh?

How does that work?

Part of the fatigue certainly comes from leverage on the tip. Some also comes from overall weight and raising it any distance above waist height.

Been fishing a 13' center pin for a while now and the extra few feet let you hold the rod a bit lower and still get more reach.

gimble cover works good then just flatten sum weights and put them in it till you get the balance you want.

Hey Karry , what is the price for those rods and parts?...

I made my first rod two years ago at Gregs Custom Rods in Lake Stevens and it was fun to make your own rod and the price was good too. I made a fly rod with a Rainshadow blank and I love it and I like the green shiny color. I like Rainshadow Rods and I'm going to build more!....

I fish a Loomis Float Series 1262S rated 6-10# and 10'-6" with a Shimano Stradic 3000.

I have been happy fishing 10# ultragreen mono because it pretty much floats- making the mending easy, but now I am trying braid to increase sensitity- may not work??? despite what people say, I believe that sensitivity is important for float fishing with steelhead. often the float does not go down, but you can feel the "peck, peck, peck". this is also why length helps to keep mainline off the water. line of the water reduces sensitivity and hook setting power.

I will say that I am looking for an alternative float rod for big river winter steelheading. the 6-10# rating may be good for summer runs, but it is a little weak for hook setting a size 1 or 1/0. I have spent a great deal of time testing the different Loomis and Lamiglas rods in comparison to mine (in the store, that is). I believe that the Lamiglas X96JS is where I will end up. It is rated 6-15# and is medium power.

with increased length you get some increased sensitity in the tip, but you sacrifice power I believe. When I compare the 11' + Loomis rods to my 10'-6" they seem much more noodly.

I wish that the Vedder rod came in a spinning setup. and dont know enough about Lami blanks to find a similar one in their lineup.

Chrome D,
You get better hook-setting ability with a longer rod, as you are moving more line. I have L Cert Pro 9.5 and 10.5 spinning rods and when switching to the 10.5, I have to be careful not to straighten a hook on the hookset (I set pretty hard and use braid). The 9.5 (I have the X96MS) does have a little more power for fighting big fish, but not much. I prefer the 10.5 for big rivers and for throwing really small jigs and spinners, as it loads with less weight.

Regarding the tip, you have a semantics issue. The tip of a longer rod of similar power is more "sensative" in that it moves more with a tap b/c it's more noodly. B/C the tip moves more, it does not transfer as much of the tap's energy to vibrations. A stiffer tip doesn't move as much, hense more energy is transfered as vibration and it feels more "sensative". I absolutely feel my spinners better with my 9.5 than with my 10.5. That said, the difference in sensativity with braided vs mono, IMHO, is far greater than the difference between my 9.5 and 10.5.

Come to the Three Riveres steelhead extravaganza on Sat. Dec. 6, and you may win a fine float rod for free. We have a couple of new Lamiglas rods that are fine float rods. They will be given away as do prizes.
One is the Bill Herzog spoon rod and one is the Dave Vedder float rod.(Both are excellent float rods.)

I think he was looking for a spinnin rod dave. Im unsure but i believe they make those blanks in spinning but without your guyses autographs. I fished a herzog 10' 8-17 and loved it. I think its gotta be the best all around rod. U can catch anything ont it... well almost..
