Get em out as early as possible, fish can be anywhere in the hole. My favorite are the fish that grab early, maybe before all the plugs are out.

I was wondering what the "slush" was as well. I like to have my anglers thumb the plugs out into position. This is done by keeping the rod tip low to the water, let out a quick 10 ft and then slowly fish the final 30' out or so. This technique puts alot of the plug control into the hands of the people holding the rods.

Lotsa good info here. Thanks.

Seems that I am fishing the plugs about the same as everyone else is. (Even Kaiser at times).

i always try to float the plugs at the head of the riffle , mot letting them dig in till they are in deeper water, try to float them through the rocks till there in deep water then you got deeper water to put your oars in an start pulling the plug under .its tricky getting them through the riffle at the head of the pool, if you hang up , you can always go over to the shallow side an get out an walk back up to free the plug ,

I was a plug monkey back when I got my first driftboat. Techniques change, and plugging has fallen out of favor. The problem with plugs is that one boat can tie up a hole run, as sidedrifting can allow several boats to fish. Each tech has its pros, and cons. Heres some guidelines that might help ya.

Yes, I agree with bronc above. I let the plugs out up in the heavy water, and just keep the boat in the seam. Be careful I have had plugs hammered when we were letting them out. Once the plugs are above the spot I want to fish, I start holding the boat in place, and get em running.

You want the same pound/brand of line on all the rods running. I liked 10lb maxima ultragreen.

Try to fish each run very slowly. Also work side to side. I have taken fish behind other guys who I watched not work the run completely.

Measure the distance you want the plugs from the boat. I liked 45 feet. WIth the plugs at your desired distance take a bobber stop knot and put it just in front of the real. You want both plugs side by side. This way if a fish tries to go around, he runs into another plug. I also liked running a third rod just behind the other two. If that fish does get around the first two, he runs into another plug.

Do not set the hook when you get bit. Let the fish load the rod, and then put the pressure on him. It seemed to me if you could keep a plug fish on for the first minute or two, your odds got a lot better. I like rod holders. I can watch the plugs better, and make sure they are running right. Also it gives the fish time to turn down stream and get the hooks in some meat.

Back when we were allowed to use barbed hooks, I ran trebles. When we went to barbless I liked Siwash hooks.

Use reels with a smooth drag. Old reels with a jerky drag are gonna cost you fish.

Lastly don't get upset at the hardcore take downs, and no fish. If your getting bit, you know your doing something right.

Dont be afriad to plug a run a couple times. I have gotten fish on my second pass numerous times.

As far as plug selection, that debate could go on for ever. I learned with wigglewarts, and have 50-70 of them. I even have mag warts for that dirtier water. I also like hotshots, and tadpollys.

Hope this helps ya.
