A few of my favorite fishing images I have saved on the computer. Show yours for fun.

My limited experiences with posting photos makes it seem a bigger hassle than it's worth. Got to resize to a certain number of pixels, like I know how big a frikkin' pixel is, or how many is in my picture, and how to change it. Screw it.
I haven't had my avatar since Bob changed the format last year either.

Hey Salmo, try this web site. I have used it for years for my downloading pleasure. Shrinks and does all that pixel crap for ya.

Salmo. 450-650 pixels wide at 72dpi is about right for posting stuff on the interweb. Computer monitors only display at 72dpi and so a higher resolution is only making an image more bulky and slower to load, not necessarily better in visual quality.

Are you a PC or a Mac guy? There are lots of easy and free photo editing programs out there if you don't have one that would have come with your camera or computer.

Send me a PM if you would like some help. Would love to see a few from your archive smile

This is of a native cutthroat my cousin caught in a small coastal creek on a stonefly pattern. I thought the slashes standing out underwater looked neat.

Coley,

I use a PC. Most of my photos are old stuff on slides, but we have a new gadget to make digital images from slides and negatives too I think.

I've been using a Pentax digital camera, 4 MP, set to highest resolution. I have no idea what the pixel dimensions are of the photos I upload onto my computer. I start to run into trouble the moment I select a photo to upload onto the web. I think I need a "step 1, step 2, . . . " for however many steps it takes. For a non-techie like me it just hasn't seemed worth the hassle.

As soon as I get some free time, I'm gonna' make a digital image of an old steelhead photo and see if Parker can fix it up. As a non-techie, I'm also not much of a photographer. As a result I don't have many cool fish pictures.

If you are trying to upload images without modifying them first, your file size and display size will be much larger than needed, or than will work for many sites.

A 4mp (4 million pixel)camera shooting in 2x3 aspect ratio will likely be about 2700x1400 pixels, roughly. In full quality form, most images probably be around 2-3mb's, which will be slow to load, email, etc.

Do you have a photo editing program on your computer, one that would have come with your camera by chance? Photo Laboratory and Photo Browser come with most pentax camera's I think. I am a Mac guy and haven been on a PC for quite a while now, so some of the points might differ just a bit.

I shoot and import in full quality and then re-size photos based on what I am going to do with them. For a quick posting on the internet or something, a 500 pixel wide image is about right visually and at 72dpi, it is a very small file which loads quickly and doesn't bog down pages.

Whichever photo editing program you have on your PC should allow you to set the resolution to 72 and change the image size (in pixels, inches, or both) and then export/save the new file. From the upload to the internet by one of any number of means.

As you said, perhaps, in the end, more trouble than it is worth, but not as bad as it may seem once you get the hang of it. And all for what, so a bunch of dudes sitting at a computer can wish they were outside even more smile

My camera came with ACDC photo software. I can rotate, crop, and I don't know what else, but I haven't seen anything about resizing in either pixels or inches. Maybe it's in there and I can't see the forest for the trees. It's gonna' be a busy weekend, but maybe next week I can give it a look.

I got that ACDSee software with my Pentax optio and even though I've ditched the optio I still like to use that program to resize my photo's. Select your photo, click the Tools tab, and then "Resize Image".

I found that if I do a 15% of original size reduction of a 1.2 Mb original photo, that usually gets me under the 104 Kb photo size to post.

Sure. Stick the photo in the mail and I'll get it all digitalized for you.

Patagonia's new fishing catalog came in the mail today and the image below was their cover shot. Incredibly sweet image.

Parker, I'm not sure where the original slide is, and the print is a framed 8x10.

Wait a minute, I'm confused (not the first time).

Sg are you saying the Patagonia print is an original Sg?

Where was this on the popularity contest thread?

kneel

BTW that is you with the sign Sg.

No. SG is saying that he's got a photo that he wants digitized, but he can't find the original photo, and the only thing he has of it now is an 8x10 print.

The artsy-patagonia thing is/was their latest cover shot.

Long ago, SG owned the rights to that sign. When SG talks, we all should bow and listen.

Parker is confusing, but that's correct. I have a print, and a slide somewhere, of a big steelhead I landed. Nothing like the Patagonia pic. I'm a lousy photographer of fish. Damned things won't hold still. Or I stand in the way and cast a shadow over half the fish in this case.

I'll get to it Parker.

I think you meant "Meat Grazer," just like they showed you down in Panama.
