Reports that nets are doing good? Or that sporties are doing bad?
Not much water in there right now... Sporties doing bad. Reports were from the lower river.

The Hoh does have a net schedule. It is constantly adjusted according catch to limit overfishing, or underfishing. Right now it is very bad fishing. There is talk to shut down the nets with the exception of subsistence fishing only. (If it hasn't been done already) The tribe is probably one of the few tribes that schedule gill netting around sport fishing. Usually on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you see them fishing weekends it usually is substistence fishing. They are great people to work with and try to reduce sport fishing clashes.

Here's the schedule...it doesn't show what days per week, just how many days per week (1-3 thru the season)...but like wb said, they usually net early in the week. Fish on... Todd

That doesn't include nets like this one, though, which we found on the bank of the Hoh a couple of weeks ago, complete with an excellent float, and two rotten steelhead (one hatchery, one wild) in it. This net doesn't really have a fishing schedule...it's one of the several we saw that is always fishing, regardless of day or season. "Hogsz not Hoez"...indeed. Fish on... Todd

Pretty sad pics. Unfortunately, there is always the good, the bad, and the ugly. Those pics are ugly. Overall, I always felt the Hoh Tribe is a little more sensitive than other Tribes regarding its gill-netting schedule. I've had a lot of conversation with their previous Biologist and current Council memebers and I was impressed with their mindset. Without making exuses for the ugly pics, I think there are good people down there. But as with the human condition there is always the ugly. Too bad.

Subsistence fishing is a non-comercial food fishery. Usually for parties, tribal functions, or food for Elders. They are not allowed to sell the fish caught. The argument against subsistence fishing is why not set aside comercially caught fish for subsistence?
I think the posted pics of bad tribal netting practices by a few members creates an embarrasement for the Tribe. And rightfully so. I know their enforcement officer, and he is trying his best to monitor and control illegal practices and bad gill netting behavior.

I didn't take Todd's posting of the mangled fish and net as "bad netting" practice, my first thought was the dude got hosed by Mother Nature! But my glass is always half-full too

Thanks Todd for the info. Even though it was from last year it probably gives a good idea of what they're up to this season. That is about as reasonable of a net schedule as I've ever seen - such as it is...

That's not from last year...that's the schedule that's being fished right now. The years aren't correct on the schedule, it should read 08 and 09, not 07 and 08.
The Hoh/WDFW agreement this year actually got a few concessions out of the tribe, one of which is that their subsistence fish are being counted as part of their allocation, which is not usually the case.
Fish on...
Todd
