The wife and I (no kids) are heading to Mazatlan next week for a some fun-n-sun. Neither one of us have been there.
Looking for any recommendations by fellow PP'ers who have actually been there. Would love to know what we need or should see/do (other than catch some rays by the pool).
Would also love to know some recommendations on places to eat - and not at the typical tourist-trap areas.
Don't think I'll get out on Big Blue to fish, as the wife gets seasick when she flushes the toilet. Besides, I'll go fishin' when I'm in Cabo next year.

I'll be perfectly honest with you Parker, I think Mazatlan is the worst city to visit on the west coast of Mexico.
The last time I stayed there I didnt leave the hotel the entire week except once to go to the pharmacia. We only went because my mother had free timeshare we had to use. Later in 2008, When our Royal Carribean cruise ship stopped there, my wife and I didnt even get off the boat.
Beyond the Golden zone where the strips of hotels are, the place is a dump.

We will. After spending two weeks in Uzbekistan and Kyrzgystan, I'm guessing what they are calling a "dump" doesn't quite live up to what I know to be "dumps". Although, I have heard that Mazatlan is pretty close to a "[censored]-Hole" if there is one. I can at least drink the water and eat the ice in Mazatlan with out the real fear of dying. (Editors Note: I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS just get bottled beer, or bottled water. tap water+ice in Mexico can never be a good thing, regardless of where you are.) Oh yeah, and that goes for the people, too. Not too sure there are too many islamic extremist groups and people in Mazatlan willing and able to cut my head off for their cause. At least I hope not. I guess if you see me on CNN, on my knees, about to have my head cut off by Islamic Mexican Extremists, you can say "Told ya so!") There will be sun, pools, and booze. +1 A quick run to the market, and we're set for breakfasts, lunches, beer, snack, booze, etc. +1 No kids. + 47 million. Apparently, I'll shy away from touring the city. I've seen enough dump piles to last a lifetime. Would like to find a couple of nice places to eat for dinner. I'm sure they are there - you just gotta look past the dump piles to find them. Why go all the way down there? You can get drugs and AK-47's right where you are. Seastrike needs to chime in with his Cabo story. I think he was trying to get on that TV show, "Locked up Abroad" The AK's are already buried in the back yard in cosmoline. Duh.

We stayed at the Royal Villas last time and they had a great restaurant in the Hotel. Try the sauteed shrimp platter Also if you want to get out and fish for 4 hours, right in front of the Royal Villas there is a guy who operates jet skis, parasailing, water sports .etc, He has a panga and will take you out for 4 hours for $50.00 to the other side of Bird Island, the northern island off Mazatlan. We caught a bunch of Trevally casting to schools and trolling plugs(huge schools of Trevally there) ...King Mexican Snakefish and Sierra Mackeral. What hotel you guys staying in?

There is a huge food market south of town. Don't remember the name, probably mercado, but it is a site to see. You will easily find out where it is by asking around. I'll never forget the freshly killed and skinned half a cow just laying on the counter and not in a cooler.
There is a really cool 100+ year old Catholic church a few blocks from this mercado. It's open during the day and worth a peak just to see the gold ceilings and statues in the church. You can even say a prayer asking forgiveness for being such a PHUKER.

Us PHUKERS need all the help we can get! We're staying at the Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan - only because we own a unit at the PB Los Cabos and know their facilities, people, etc. All of the Pueblo Bonito's are pretty much the same - other than how new they are, how fancy-schmancy they are, etc. The PB Mazatlan has two nice pools, a bunch of great beach access (roped off to prevent the beach sellers from pestering you too much), and if the staff are anything like they are at the other PB's, if you *try* to speak some spanish with them and not be the typical American-Dickhead-Traveler, they are very friendly and helpful.

PB? That's where we stayed for 10 days about 7 years ago for FREE. I did give a few hundred bucks to the owners for letting us use the free lodging tickets so yes I was a PHUKER of a different sort. Turned out I shouldn't have given them anything, since they were the PHUKER's.
I don't spend much time away from a 200 mile radius from King county, but I was impressed with the resort. Totally spotless and beautiful. The staff was way cool. The pool bartender even hooked me UP and it was free again!
Emerald Bay has snook. You got to walk the beach (to the right) all the way to the other end, and fish before you get near the first house. It's a long ass walk , but that's the spot because it get's deep fast.

the only place worse than mazatlan is the big prison Well hell. If anyone would know that, it would be a Lupo. In Edmonds now, huh? If you're the true Lupo, welcome back. I think. This time, I *promise* I won't make your computer talk to you. No, really. Could be worse - could be JK...... Still don't think Stam will talk to you, though. Or Seastrike. Here's your avatar photo. It was missed around here.
