I'll be in the Oil Patch from mid to late August and getting home early September.
The early August R&R will be Alpine Blacktail forays,as will the Sept vacation...though I'll likely slum a freshwater Coho jaunt or two in September, unless I get hung up chasing Bears streamside.
Hopefully the weather is better this year, than it was last.

Tough saying on the distance, because I wasn't paying much attention as I was trying to soak it all in and do him some justice with pics. I was gunning a Canon 1.6x crop body DSLR with a 100-400m L attached, pard was shooting fullframe Canon DSLR and 500mm F/4 L with 1.4x TC attached. We had him at or near 100yds I'd say in retrospect. Spotted him from over a mile away,as we'd just completed a sneak on an absolute monster Booner MuskOx Bull that traveled out on the ice pack the Spring or Winter prior and found himself stranded on an island after the ice melted. I never could get any killer pics of him as he had us pinpointed, the wind was wrong and the boat was in a tough place with the water going away. He's a toad. Actually had my Leica LRF in tow and I was glassing with it when I spied the bedded Bear. As we approached,I never hit him with the laser,as I was trying to fill up an 8gig card with him. A couple days prior the boys had him swimming in open water and got a rather nice look at him from the boat and that's a trip I'm sorry that I missed. I'm standing on the ice pack here and the island the MuskOx was on,is to my 1 O'clock...the Bear was East of him a coupla miles. With the MuskOx being miles from mainland,I still can't believe that Bear or another, hadn't slicked him up...as we saw 5 Polar Bears in proximity that evening, all schlepping different islands. Should be lots of critters mulling about this hitch and I think I'll bring my big camera bag so I'll have the works with me.

The closeups of the polar bear are excellent...not a chance one often gets. Nice shots of the oxen, too.
Fish on...

'Guy,
I don't gun any prime glass,L or otherwise. Everything illustrated is zoom generated and as a rule, they do pretty good.
Will be gunning the new 5D MK II next time home, for a dedicated Saltwater Safari and I hope to catch a few good images during the fray. The Canon 100-400m L remains an absolute monster of a lens, due to it's versatilty and IQ. Though it's "slow" in aperture, the new herd of Canon DSLR's aid that nicely in their ISO boost abilities.
I shoot alotta Canon 70-200 F/2.8 too,but it's pretty snug for backdeck Hero Shots on a boat, even on a fullframe body and generous deckspace. I'll have 4 bodies with me on the jaunt, which will help keep maritime lens swapping to a minimum. Will go 24-70 F/2.8 L on the 5D MK II,100-400 L on the 40D(banking that 1.6x inherent crop factor for reach),17-40 L on the 1Ds and 70-200 F/2.8 L on the XTi(nice frame rate for tight frames of mouth agape 'Lings surfacing and 'But Dancing).
I love prime glass for a riflescope, but it don't swoon me for Outdoor Photography and it's ever changing scenarios. The 500m F/4 excluded,as it is The Holy Grail for critters, but $5500 is a coupla more rifles and that'd be my truest affliction and blood interests me more than prints.
May slum the 100mm Canon F/2.8 USM Macro for tightly framed Chromer study pics and for accurate representation of the various spins of finite deviation, applied to tackle presentation patterns...if only for giggles.
Will be curious to see what Canon unveils in their newest Pro Body and I can see me taking that plunge, assuming they don't drop the ball. All in all I can't complain,as I've most bases covered, though advances in bodies always intrigue, while glass is a far more static avenue.
