A different twist to my down rigging question.... If money wasn't an issue and you owned a 2118 XL Columbia, what mooching combo would you own if you were fishing by yourself? Please consider I'm the only one in the boat.

The rods are good but even if I had unlimited money I would go with a Shimano 2000GT mooching reel at 1/10 the price of the Islander MR3. The one important difference is that you can free spool the 2000GT. If you are bouncing bottom at 200 feet deep free spool gets down faster and lets you keep contact with the bottom. Drag is not so important because the advantage of both reels is that you use the side of your thumb and palm as the drag. The 2000GT is all graphite and requires almost no maintenance, we have used two of them for the past 15 years and they still work fine.

Words of wisdom, there.... and living proof that sometimes LESS is best!

I love my Islanders and Hardy Longstone, that said a Diawa or Shimano reel will be just fine for a loooong time.

Am loving the Tekota 300 LC's,though I'm going to stoke a few with 80lb PP to fend abrasion issues incurred by PO'd Halibut,as the 50 is wearing thin. Literally.

On the lowly Berk' 9' 20-50# loaner rods for company, they balance very nicely and the weight is favorable for long days on the Salt.

65# is the answer, though my stash of same is currently dry,so up I go.
