How many of you are using 8" vs. 11" flashers? I really like how much nicer the fight is with the smaller flasher. I've gone to e-chip and figure that I might gain a little bit of "pulse" to make up for the smaller wave that the blade makes.

I use 11 inch flashers with ace-hi's and hoochies, sometimes the 8's in front of a spoon or coho killer that has its own action.
Didn't you lose a couple fish this year on the 40# Rico?
Time to gear up & put that fish in the boat next time. They don't care if it's 40 or 60...

Yep, I lost 3 fish this year on the take down and beginning of run, two of 'em in one morning, but that's only 3 compared to many, many caught, so I'm sticking to the 40# UG. I use the 11 inch flasher always with hootchies and Ace-Hi's. Measure from the back of the flasher to the top of the Ace-Hi, at least that is how I measure. The set up has now changed a bit on the bottom end. 3/0 Rvfshr Octopus hook on the bottom, 7 green/and or pink beads, 3/0 Rvfshr Siwash hook on top, then 4 beads to the Ace-Hi, then 18" normaly of length of leader from there to the back end of the flasher for coho's, max 22', 22" to 24" for kingers. I hate the Echip models, done better and less dog fish with out it. And I hate trolling slow. 2.7 minimum speed for kingers, 3 minimum for coho, but steep line angle for me. Maybe I'm goofy, but it's been working and I'm sticking to it. We've trolled as fast as 6 mph with the tide to get the line angle and nailed fish.

I see there's glo, UV, and "laser". What's laser, anyway, I ask myself. Wow, this is harder than I thought. Hmm.
All I know about the laser ones are that when I went into the garage the other night in the dark after laying out all my ace -flies to see what I had I saw that several were glowing. Turned on the light and the flies that were glowing in the dark were the laser ones. The others weren't. The question then is does it make a difference and I have no idea.

For my money, you should measure the length of the leader from the tip of the loop (used to attached to flasher/dodger) to end of the lure, be it the tentalcles on hoochies, hair on Grand Slams or the hook. This also the method used by Capt Downrigger, et al.

Against my belief, I admit Rvrfsher sickles kick balls ... want to really put the test to the ho's, put 5 glow beads in between the two hooks.
Has anyone had any issues with the octopus sickle hooks breaking?? I've been using the sickle siwash on my spoons and the sickle octopus on my hootchies for quite a while and never had any issues until a couple weeks ago. I find they hook up well and hold fish and had totally converted over to using them 100% of the time. A couple weeks ago we fished for a week on the west coast of Vancouver Island and the huge Coho were so thick that you couldn't get your gear down through them to fish Chinook. We caught and released 60-70 double digit Coho a day, to about 20lbs. We had probably 25-30 octopus sickles break off on thrashing, spinning fish next to the boat as we were getting ready to release them. The hooks broke in the same spot every time, at the 1st angle down from the eye. I finally bought some Gami's up there and and never broke another hook. Since I had never had an issue before in 2+ years with the sickle octopus I'm wondering if I just got a bad batch?? The sickle siwash were just fine. I think they are a heavier hook. Anyone else have the same experience??

Funny thing about this point. Today, we fished All over area 9, it was pretty slow. Around 12:30 Gunnar had a huge hit, line was peeling off quick as he grabbed his rod. We could tell immeadiately that this was no 9 pound doinker coho... BIG FISHThe fish took another good run, then we lost it.  After inspecting the lure we saw it had bit right through the 40# test, right between the hooks. The line was probably in the corner of the fishes mouth as it ran away from us, then once it thrashed, then line raked across it's teeth and broke the leader. Major Bummer. Big fish typically make a few good runs, putting that leader right into a position where it can get raked hard by the fishes teeth once the fish turns. Of course, where you hook the fish plays a role, but in my experience a lot of troll caught fish get hooked in the upper palate, increasing the leader exposure to the fish's teeth. Would have been real nice to have landed that fish today. Moral of the story...Gunnar is buying some new 60# test this week....

It doesn't happen all that often, but when I get in a really goood bite, I toss the flashers. I hate the damn things. Yeah, they will put a few more fish in the boat. But . . .
Last month Bret lowe and I were in a solid coho bite and took off the flasshers. We figured we got about 3/4 as many hits and had about 300% more fun on the ones we landed. It's supposed to be fun, and an 11 inch flasher takes a lot of the fun out of a big, mean coho.
I have fished with a friend for fall coho in the sound for many years.He alwasy goes with the flasher and hoochie. I always go with naked cut plug. Over the year we are very near even and I have a hell of a lot more fun with my fish.

I've also had some break in the same spot yours were. I really dig the way they hook and hold a fish,but don't dig having to go through so many hooks. Losing gear is part of fishing,but losing gear due to shitty quality is something different.

I bought my first green splatter back UV Ace Hi a few weeks ago at Outdoor. The next morning I put it down first thing, three minutes later, whamo, a nice King. I think I will be owning a few more.

Well, I'm a firm believer in the those hooks. The sickle siwash, get most of 'em from RVFSHR. They be good hooks. Have I broken any? Yes. But, never on a fish. If you use the pliers that are grooved for crimping stuff, put the eye of the hook in and firmly squeeze together, no breakage, if you use plane old non-grooved pliers, and the hook is not straight in them, and slips when you crimp down, you'll sometimes break the eye. But, would you rather have a few broken hooks or more bite and sticks in the water????, I say more clean hookups is more important than a few dry land breakeges. I know there was a batch lesser quality strength hooks a while back, but they've gotten it fixed, and luckily I never had any of those. But they are good quality hooks for sure and do stick fish well. Nearly 1oo% on blackmouth last year, pretty impressive results on everything else this year.

40# test is fine 98% of the time, especially if ya add a bunch of beads between the two hooks, and them 3/0 rvfshr siwash hooks are tough pieces of metal meant to penetrate and stick, kinda like Sol on a Friday night after a couple tequila's.

I agree with Addicted that the sickle octopus hooks are the way to go for trolling. For the first year I tested them I had a 100% hook to land ratio. When you hookup, you really stick 'em good with the long straight hook point, and with barbless that helps keep the hook embedded by limiting the rotation of the hook during the fight. They don't wiggle back out as easily.
I've also never had a hook break on me. I think it's safe to say a weak batch was put out and the problem was fixed.
My only beef is that I'd love to see them made with a high grade stainless wire for marine use (like some stainless Mustads), and they don't stay sharp for very long. Make sure you touch them up with a sharpener often.

rinse them off quickly when ya get home, they hold up fine. No rinse, change the hooks, they rust quickly without the rinse, but still well worth having them. I often spray WD-40 on the gear when getting back from the salt, works well.
