Just keep the weights 12 or more inches above the eggs, and you will be legal

I think the only change from the previous anti-snagging rule is that a shorebound angler using a floating lure can now use more than one single point hook...the rest, as confusing as it is, hasn't changed.

My take is that you can use a leadhead under a float, like a jig...but a Dedfish weight would not be legal, unless it was at least 12 inches from the bait, which would kind of make it a pretty ineffective technique.

The rule hasn't changed for the boaties, just for the shore guys...mainly allows for tossing plugs from the bank, can have two hooks now, instead of just the one that was required before.

I think.

Fish on...

I've got that a few times. Fishing a jig on the Snohomish and a boat full of redneck dumbasses threaten to turn me in for using a lure that sinks. I asked WTF they were talking about and got the "its a NBL restricted area, you can only use lures that float".

I cannot beleive we can't use a bait weight now, that's totally ridiculous and very shortsighted by the WDFW.
What about the Dead Fish Bait Weight company? This puts him out of business I suppose.

Fishing a glob of eggs with a small split shot or colored bullet weight is one of my most effective techniques. and it REALLY SUCKS that it's now deemed illegal. I think the WDFW should re-write the rule to allow bait weights, and re-issue a clarified statement depicting exactly what is and is not illegal under the revised rules.

Remember, this only applies in waters that fall under the "Anti-Snagging Rule", which aren't all that many, and only at specific times in those waters.

The way I read that you can use bait weights as long as you're in a boat that is moving under power.

Good point Todd, but it still steps on my toes a bit.

That is Correct Castingpearls. However, if I am banking it, fishing for Coho, up to Nov. 30th on the river I like to fish a lot, you cannot use a bait weight.

You know, at my job I write technical papers/reports/etc. Sometimes I want to make several points in one paragraph, and 7 times out of 10 that paragraph is very hard to read. Why can't WDFW ever just use a bullet list? Just once, organize a paragraph, use some freakin' white space, and give us all a chance to understand it.

So far I understand I am supposed to attach trebble hooks to my bobber, a single hook on my plug, a corkie pegged 12" from my spinner, and anything that I get from the gill plate forward must be retained.

Yup. That's why there are a lot of folks out there snagging humpies in the ass or belly - so they don't have to keep them if they were hooked in mouth.

That may have been their intent, but that's not what I read in the release...no longer any mention of the two hook restriction for trolling.

Action: Change the definition of the anti-snagging rule to: Except when fishing with a buoyant lure or trolling from a floating device

if your river only has the new anti snagging rule on it they are reverting back to the state wide general rules if you are fishing with a bouyant lure or trolling from a floating device.

state wide general rules below,

Hook and line angling only. Barbed or barbless
hooks may be used, and a hook may be
single-point, double, or treble, but not more
than one line with up to three hooks per angler
may be used.
Single-point barbless hooks are required
in areas designated as "fly fishing only" or
"selective gear rules."
All fishing gear must be kept in immediate
control and may not be left unattended while
fishing. Rodholders may be used, but the rod
must be easily removed without delay; rod
may be left in holder while playing the fish.
A club or dipnet may be used to assist landing
a legal fish taken by legal gear. A gaff hook
may not be used.
It is unlawful to possess a fish taken from
freshwater that was not hooked inside the
mouth or on the head. The head is defined as
any portion forward of the rear margin of the
gill plate.

I got one better...

All rods should be equipped to deliver a hi-voltage shock each and every time the operator jerks before the rod is fully loaded.

Done....

But that would be too easy....

Not to mention damned fun to watch at the local snaggery.

Since a bait weight is used below a float, well isn't it a floating lure?
