An Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession of a 12-foot Great White Shark in the Depoe Bay area in early August has led to the citing of a Warren, Oregon man for Unlawful Possession of a Great White Shark. The offense is a non-criminal fish and wildlife violation with a listed citation bail of $299.00.

"Our investigation indicated there was no obvious self-initiated attempt by Mr. Robinson to contact any authorities after he caught the shark before bringing it to the port. If our trooper wasn't at the right place at the right time then we believe he would have unlawfully kept the shark for his own personal interests," said Captain Walt Markee, director of the OSP Fish & Wildlife Division.

The shark was caught on August 8, 2009 and at about 7:45 p.m. a sport tuna boat brought the shark to the Depoe Bay docks. An OSP Fish & Wildlife trooper working on routine patrol at the docks learned about the catch and contacted the boat occupants. The trooper saw what he believed to be a Great White Shark was already gutted. The boat's occupants indicated the shark had become entangled in their crab gear and was pulled to the surface when they were bringing in a crab pot.

One of the anglers identified as Jason W. Robinson, age 32, from Warren, Oregon stated he was responsible for the shark. Robinson told the trooper that the shark had been gutted so it could be eaten. Prior to seizing the shark to confirm it was in fact a Great White Shark, the trooper showed Robinson a portion of the Marine Zone regulations on page 101 of the 2009 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations prohibiting the possession of Great White and Basking Sharks and that one must immediately release them unharmed.

On August 9th OSP Fish & Wildlife troopers took the shark to the Hatfield Marine Science Center where it was positively identified as a Great White by the National Marine Fisheries Service and ODFW.

On October 1st, Robinson was cited to appear in Lincoln County Circuit Court on October 8, 2009 for the violation offense of Unlawful Possession of Great White Shark.

As a reminder, anyone that discovers a Great White Shark or a Basking Shark deceased should call the Oregon State Police toll free at 1-800-452-7888 to report the discovery and obtain further instructions.

Yes, with a Crab Davit, in around 80' of water I believe. Danielson $15 box trap, on light nylon rope.

Hell, on a full pot of dungi's, I usually bulge a vein or two hauling them up. Would hate to think of the O ring strain pulling up a 700# shark...

So how long were they expired?....
I got pulled over for expired boat trailer tabs in P.A.....two months passed renewal date. Did the "Well, no [censored]! Wow! I really didn't know."

"On your way, and get those plates updated."

"Yessir!"

Probably wouldn't happen today, tho, with GG's spendthrifty debt to pay off.

edit: Oops....hijack....hijack.......
about that shark.....it could have suffocated when it became entangled....they die if they can't move forward to circulate water through their gills.......sounds possible, but I don't think it happened that way, either.
