Snaggers Put The Fish Down!

I know all you guys must know this for the most part but just in case someone here doesn't know; read the title of this thread.
I was on the river at first light, fly rod in hand. Catch a silver on second cast. Hook another one. Than the snaggers start ripping through them and no more bites.
Besides all the other reasons to hate snaggers here is another: they put the bite off.
I suppose that is what I get for fishing a hatchery hole.

It is definitely true. Recently on the Chehalis, everyone has taken to swimming jigs. That is fine, it is a great technique, and cohos will readily jump all over it in many instances.
I started jigging the Halis in 2002, and have learned over time that it does not induce lethargic, stagnant fish to bite any more than spinners/plugs/bait etc. When I first tried it I landed something like 26 dandy b-runs over 2 days, and I thought I had found the holy grail, but I found out quickly that it is just another weapon in the quiver. It is a cyclic deal, some years and places the fresh fish are very receptive to it, and other years it gets less bites than a spinner or plug. This year has been a good jig year and unfortunately, that has created a lot of bad technique. None of these anglers are snagging on purpose, but they are putting down lots and lots of potential biters.
There is really only one key to swimming jigs. The lift does not have to be quick, or hard, but you have to have control of the drop. A lot of people are making up for bad technique (no drop control) by using a swift hard lift, which unfortunately foul hooks a lot of fish.

Were you using sink tip? You maybe also be "flossin" them yourself. I wasn't using a sink tip at that time but did later. I know when I am flossin' them. It isn't like I have never done that, but it wasn't on purpose. It is the guys that snag and floss all day every day at these spots that get me. Some don't have a clue how to ever hook one of these fish in the mouth. I put my honest number when fishing very aggressively with a fly at a hatchery hole around 1 snag for every 5 fish in the mouth. That is about where I draw the line and I consider that acceptable. Some of these guys hook 40 fish in a day and not a single one in the mouth.

Sort of off-topic. What flies do you like for silvers?
I am taking my secretary (excuse me, office manager) and her husband fishing on Friday. They are hoity toity fly-people, but have agreed they will slum it with me. And, I agreed to try fly fishing a little.
We'll be in a boat fishing places I know will have aggro silvers in them, but I have never been able to consistently get them to bite in those locations on flies. None of these locations will be fishable on the swing, they are all cast/retrieve type spots. I have all sorts of lines from floating to the heaviest sink tips Jim Teeny has ever flossed with.
I have flash flies, ESLs, marabou stuff, glo bugs, pretty much every coho fly known to man. It is weird that I can take them with jigs, but not flies tied in the exact same colors, with heavy heads.

Hey Rocket Red,
IMO: for river coho the best fly is a purple egg sucking leech followed closely by a black egg suck leech, followed by a small pink jiggy fly with some flash.

Were you using sink tip? You maybe also be "flossin" them yourself. Sounds like you are calling all flyfisherpeople who use sink tips "flossers"...and of the order "snaggers"..... .If so, then you are calling all Western Washington/beyond, big river Flyfisherpeople ""flossers"and as such "Snaggers".....Was that your intent? I hope it wasn't because you just offended a whole bunch of people...Tom

I grew up fly fishing around here and I take absolutely no offense to what was said. You don't need to be so sensitive.
