I just got my boat not too long ago so I have no experience pulling plugs for salmon. My girlfriends mom works for Wordens Lures (Yakima Bait Co). She has a chance to buy a lot of factory defects for very cheap. Needless to say I have a plethora of flat fish of all sizes. Many of them look just like the K 14 and K15 Kwikfish. All I hear about fishing for chums in the rivers is that you need Kwikfish. Do I need to go buy a bunch of expensive Kwikfish or will my factory defect flat fish work?

Cameron flatfish and kwikfish are very similar. T-50s are just as good as K-14's and K-15s. Discounted rate, hella amount of color choices stay with Wardens lure, think your girlfriend can get me around 100 M2-SPs for cheap wink
The only confidence you need to have is the right color and make sure they run true, if they aint properly tuned you wont catch very many fish...

These defects are in the paint, I have fished a couple of them and they run great with minor tuning.

flat fish will wobble a little slower and wider spread... more ideal for back trolling for kings. they work pretty damn good when they run right.
Kwikies are way easier to tune. All the extremes run true due to the welded eye. everything but the 14s are easy to tune. To get some 14s to run true you have to replace the factory eye with a gravyard 15 eye.
Personally a Kwikie fan cause the less you have to mess with on the water the better and they have a few colors I like better.

I know for a fact the Flat fish are made near Yakima, according to the package Luhr Jensen is located in Minnesota and Hood River, Oregon but it is made in China, WTF?

That's the only way to do it. Some plugs catch fish and some dont. Nothing worse than loosing a fish catcher and you'll know when you've got a fish catcher.

If you get a discount on all Wordens, then I would also consider adding some Fatfish to the lineup for casting (and back rowing). That is F-A-T fish, not to be confused with Flatfish. I like them as an alt to Wiggle Warts. Slightly heavier too.

Its all about how they swim, although flat fish don't have a rattle as far as I know while most kwikis do. Personally I don't like rattles anyway unless the water is super dirty. Even if they look good they may not be fish killers, spend a season rotating em out, it helps when you know biting fish are around. I've spent years perfecting my supply of kwikfish, after buying a couple dozen I have 5 or 6 that are my number ones. Put a file mark on them or name them on the belly to keep track of their success.

Thanks guys, I thought they look similar and run similar in the water. All I ever hear about is kwik fish. I would rather use my cheap flatfish then to and spend 7 bucks on kwik fish just because they are the fad.

My hottest lure last season was the Super Bait, and although the founder is in Wenatchee...it too is made in China.Chinooks don't seem to care.GR

I prefer the M-2 and U-20 size Flatfish over the similar size Kwikfish.

I was never a big fan of the banana lures. One day, probably close to twenty years ago, Steve Kohler shared with me to look for the desireable action.
Steve shared the how to look for certain waters to get more pesentation time. How to place a wrap.

It is more about action than the paint job. beer
