Huffing was one of the few things I've been easily able to quit.

i double up a piece of mono so i get a loop about 10" long, then tie the loose ends to a snap swivel. then i take a couple dozen rags, stick a bait threader through the centers of them(like you're rigging them up), then put the end of the mono loop through the eye of the needle and pull the rags onto the loop. then take the snap and clip it on the loop, securing the rags.

if you do it right you end up with something that looks like some kind of hippy bracelet. to use, unsnap the swivel, stick the end of your leader through the loop and pull a rag onto it. sure, not as quick as having pre-tied rolls, but i hate dealing with those things(i use leader wallets). this way you don't have to have a bunch of leader rolls taking up space in your vest, and can use the rags as conditions dictate.

cmon Dave, get that boat out on a real river. the sky is for rookies man, the duc and calawah await your rags n rods.

brewer has had succes with a rag, 5' leader, pink worm /spoon combo. sometimes i'll switch from the spoon and slam on a brads wiggler... no joke!

Question. I can only find the gray foam. where can a guy find the white stuff? Does it matter?

color of backer rod makes no difference to the fish... only to fisherman. the high bouyency and contrasting colors of yarn are what makes a "rag" a visual turn on to steelhead.

And the fact that its a little sponge of scent rolling on down the river.

Sold many 100's of "Sloth's/Rags" in my area.....following pic's shows my materials and finished product...will try to explain my building process....

1. Left side....went to Boeing Surplux, found this "pink insulation 1 1/2" thick. Used a .270 casing to push though and cut the "round float material". Once "cut" they could be divided in half's or thirds.

2. Used 2/0 hooks, 12# leader....would start with leader 32-35" long.

3. Assembly....with hook and leader tied....

a. bead
b. sequin(added strength, so sloth/rag doesn't slide down on hook)
c. BODY---insulation material, with 3 or 4 colors of yawn....I use a large sewing needle to push the yarn thur insulation material.
d. sequin on top, strength and color.

Slough's/Rags work good by themselves, adding smell or bait just makes them better.

What do you use to cut the insulation into nice round chunks? OOOPS...I didn't get the .270 casing the first time I read it....very good!

DrifterWA has some good info in his post. Here is my variation:

1. Instead of a 270 brass I use a 50 S&W brass - it will cut out the rag body about 1/2 inch in diameter.

2. I buy "pool noodles" and cut them into 1 inch think "steaks" (not sure how else to describe it) and then cut the rag bodies with the 50 S&W brass. You can get a variety of colors using pool noodles (and if you can find them at a dollar store they are cheap and you can get a ton of rag bodies from each noodle).

3. Then add the yarn with a big needle.

4. Get some Q-tips with the hollow plastic "handles" and take the cotton off the ends. Take an ice pick and push it through the rag body lengthwise. Then put the hollow plastic Q-tip over the pointed end of the ice pick and as you withdraw the ice pick push the hollow plastic tube through the rag body. Cut to length and you can string the rags on your leader much more easily.

I hope I have explained this well enough so you can understand it.
