I totally expected, when that dude went tippie-toe'in up to the bend in the mine shaft, and as he inched around the corner, a giant ball of pissed off fur would blast out of the shadows, ripping his face off, and leaving the other two dudes screaming like girls and pissin themselves as the dude gettin thrashed emptied his gun into the dark, all the while the camera shaking and moving with a lot of heavy breathing ala Blair Witch Project...

Reminds me, where's that vid of the guy gettin' jacked up by the wounded lion on that hunt in Africa? THAT was awesome...

F(&% that, no pelt is worth playin that game. I was rooting for the cat as well. Especially when they couldn't close the deal at 6 f'n feet. . .. Looked like he missed at least 2 of the shots out in the open at close range as well.

I've never been a big fan of runnin animals with hounds anyway .. . . cept maybe racoons ... an tweakers .. .

I have to say that I didn't find that video nearly as cool as the guys making it think it is...something about taking three shots at a wounded kitty sitting ten feet away on the edge of a cliff surrounded by dogs doesn't exactlys scream "sportsman" to me...

Fish on...

Unless you kill the animal with your bare hands it ain't going to be sporting to some.
BTW, I do know a guy that killed a mountain lion with a big rock.

Goddamn few lions would ever be killed w/o the use of dogs.

I don't blame the guy for his poor accuracy, adrenaline and fear do weird things to a guy.
My little brother shot the Helll out of his patrol car while involved in a shootout once.

The first lion I ever killed was after the most Hellacious chase you can possibly imagine.
Miles of up & down vertical country at 8500 feet, I was a lean, mean twenty year old kid at the time.
Stuck the barrel of the .44 right between the shoulder blades, then proceeded to puke my guts out from sheer exhaustion after the kill.

Sporting?....hmmm

Howabout "telescopic sights" & long range high powered rifles?

Howabout hunting animals over bait?

Howabout compound bows capable of shooting 100 yards?

Howabout hunting pheasants over dogs?
The dogs found the poor birds all the tough guy bird hunter did is blast em.

Howabout fishing with a guide and dragging the poor fishy to the boat by the lips?

You can nit pick hunting to death until you get to that bare hands on public ground thing.

I don't find the quite the thrill in the kill as much as I once did.

Hell, I let a feral cat walk yesterday that was peering into my bird coop.
Had the crosshairs of my .22 mag right on his heart at fifty yards.
Tightened up on the trigger and decided that the damn thing was just being a cat.
That magic spark of life gets a bit more precious to some as we grow nearer to death ourselves.

That said, I've been bowhunting my arse off with my kid for about two weeks.
Thomas had a stalk go bad on an absolute monster blacktail when the wind changed suddenly.
I think we're gonna let them settle down a while and try to take him with a "non sporting" precision sniper rifle in a few weeks otherwise risk blowing the bucks off of the mountain by pressuring them too much with low percentage archery attempts.

Back on topic, I've killed lions, bears , hogs & birds with dogs.

Killing ain't pretty, I've watched bucks & bulls die at close range with sucking chest wounds as they choke on their own blood due to heavy hemorrhaging from a razor sharp broadhead.
It will leave you with mixed emotions at times.

Think about death when you wash down that big ole burger with a frosty brew.
Funny, I argued hunting with a non hunting meat eater recently, I told him that he had not earned the flesh that he was about to consume.
His clueless expression was priceless.

Hound hunting ain't for everyone, but I'll back it as an effective means to an end .

I was pulling for the cat.

10 to 1 the mighty hunter has the taxidermist pose it so it's all looking mean and vicious instead of cornered in a dark hole getting plugged point-blank.

So you think the cat didn't snarl at him?
Think crawling into that cave and facing the cat head on and not exactly knowing the outcome wasn't frightening?

Comments like those by a spectating non participant are completely predictable and considering your radical leftist orientation, I'd expect no less.

Thank you Salmonella.

I refrained from posting on this thread because I knew it would ruffle some feathers.

Any one who would go in to a old mine shaft after a wounded cougar gets a certain amount of respect from me. No way in hell I would have gone in there.

That said........

Some people hire out their killing and purchase their meat from the grocery store. I demand that I harvest my own burger and steaks. The same way I harvest my own seafood.

If hunting cats is something a person wants to do and is within the law, I say go for it. Besides, they taste excellent when cooked properly.

Anyone who states that hound hunting is not hunting has never been. Anyone who thinks a guy doing in after a cougar in tight is a P_ssy.....they have never been in tight with a cat. That takes ball as big as church bells, was dangerous as hell and was dumb dumb dumb in my oppinion. But that said, as a young man I likely would have been the one peeking around the corner. Much older and smarter now.

A cat is a scary animal and their numbers need to be controlled in Idaho and Wa. Far to many over in eastern side of our state. Hound hunting is the best way to control their numbers and since we have nature so out of balance it is needed......like it or not. And make no mistake, it is a hell of a lot tougher than sitting in some stand and shooting a deer or elk. Takes a lot more work getting hound trained and ready as well.

I would have peeked around the corner with this.

More balls than brains there, and I would jump on an opportunity to hunt cougars in a hot minute.

That wouldn't have done them much good DF. They needed way more than 3 shots. . ..

And just to clarify Syko, that cat wasn't wounded when they went into the cave after it. And yeah, I think balls larger than their brains were involved.

Another clarification, I hunt, I eat what I kill and am no hypocryte. Hound hunting for big game is just not my preference. No ill will for most who do it.

I was rooting for a clean kill, as I am sure that the guys actually taking part were doing. It didn't work out that way, but that is the risk we take in our blood/harvest "sports". I'm sure none of us have ever had a coho deathroll and cut his gills on our mono before we let him go.

Would you all rather have seen the guys break down and cry for wounding the animal, or chasing it down and dispatching it as ugly as it was?

I went hound hunting one time. It was a blast. We actually just treed the quarry and stared at them (took pics) without killing them. I don't know if it was animal harassment or not, but essentially we had proper license and tags for the activity, the treed critters just were either female, or too small, or the wrong species. About as close to CnR fishing as hunting can get.

We fishermen are pretty much on the same side as hunters, whether we can admit it or not.

Wow. Great story and video.

Sitting in the Hill Bar listening to Stam tell his story of killing the bear with his bare hands and knife was WAY better, though.

BEST BAR STORY EVER!!!!!!!!!

Never killed a lion with a handgun, nor a bear with a knife...but I did dispatch a deer with a tire iron once, not one of my favorite memories.

Fish on...

I like the idea of hound hunters out there chasing Tom's. Cats are supposed to be afraid of dogs and not look at them like an easy meal.....................................

I couldn't see the video, but crawling into a small cave after a pissed off cougar sounds like a stupid idea to me, not ballsy. However, it should rank as being considerably more sporting than treeing the cat with hounds and then shooting it.

I had an interesting discussion with a friend about relative sport as it pertains to hunting and fishing once. We ran the gamut of upstream dead drift dry fly contrasted to drifting bait and hunting with scope equiped high powered rifles to compound bows with sights to recurve bows to long bows and cedar arrows. He concluded and defined "pure sport" as two men, each armed with a 9-shot semi-auto pistol separately enter a pitch black dard warehouse, and only one of the two comes out alive. Obviously opinion, which is all it is, ranges far and wide.

Personally I have a negative opinion of hound hunting. But I think it's based on the few examples I've observed of hound hunters, who uniformly treated their hounds inhumanely, and I like dogs, being partial to retrievers.

Salmo, please dont base your opinion on 1 or 2 certain individuals.

I have 3 different friends who used to have hounds for cougar and bear hunting. I say used to because it is now illegal in Oregon.

That was 20 plus years ago, but at the time, those dog's lived the life of luxury. Some spent the nights in the house sleeping on cushy beds, the rest were spoiled rotten even if they slept outside in a nice enclosed enviroment.

Good houndsmen take care of their animals and the prey that they seek.

Problem is, nobody wants to focus on the good guy's anymore , it's easier and more new's worthy to focus on the bad apples.
