Any reports on the coho out there?

Also, I know the west side gets the migrating fish, but are there resident cohos that linger on the east side of Whidbey?

Beach fishing on the East side (8-2) was virtually non-existent as were the fish (apparently). There are generally some resident fish around but it was very quiet except for the jet ski folks. Pray for cold rains to cure both problems.....

The best spot for coho on the east side is probably the beach in front of the Bait Box at Possession Pt. They raise some net pen fish there and they generally come back in early Sept. Penn cove up by Oak Harbor has a run too... but that is mostly a snagfest.

For the best chance at catching a migrating coho... I'd fish the west side.

Bush pt.
Ft. Casey
Lagoon pt.
South Whidbey State Park

I was describing the action (lack of) at the above-referenced "best spot." Last night high tide only two guys fishing who said it was a beautiful evening and they just wanted to be out killing herring - in short, very low expectations which were met.

By the way, there were no silvers raised there this winter/spring. Past years this has been a Whidbey Island PSA program utilizing Bait Box facilities.

1. Thinking about fishing Lagoon beach at first light for an early coho tomorrow morning. Anyone doing any good off the west side beaches yet?

2. Larry B, so are you saying that the Bait Box folks skipped a year of coho hatchery release? If so, do you know why that is? Did Whidbey PSA not have sufficient funds?

TD: Correct, no fish reared there this year. Again, the on-site owners provided the facility, the State has in the past (when available) provided the fish, and the Whidbey PSA group has provided labor and feed and maybe something to cover power costs to run the pumps. Anyway, for reason or reasons unknown to me it simply did not happen this year. This will have some adverse impact on resident coho fishing next year in the Possession vicinity.

Wow, what a bummer. I'm surprised that happened. I like to buy a bucket and fish off the beach there several times a season for coho. It's a blast when the fish are in. Was lousy last year and should be non-existent next. I could be wrong, but it seems like the Bait Box runs on a shoe string budget. I wonder what effect the loss of bucket sales will have on them next year. Would be sad to see them shut down.

Hooked one right at the doc ( bait box) while waiting for Ripley after fishing all day for kingers.

Small fish, but hammered my spinner..
