Hit my old stomping grounds for opening weekend. Woods were super hot and crunchy opening day. Tried sitting instead of hiking in a few places to reduce noise, but being a wilderness area, there weren't too many other hunters pushing animals around, and with the heat, they weren't moving on their own.

Went back to camp, listened to the Beavs win on the radio... had more deer walk into camp than we saw all day.

Day two, my fiance says "forget your camo clothes, put on your lucky hunting clothes" This consists of my old green nomex firefighting pants, and a beat up Oregon State t-shirt. My last two deer have fallen to this get up, so what the hell....

After hiking into the wilderness and seeing a few does, we run into another hunter, so we shift directions and head stright up...and I mean straight up...to the top of the ridge. At the top, I spot a butt about 90yds away. At the same time, the butt spotted me... Seeing a flash of decent bone in the scope, I let one fly.

At the shot, he lunged kind of funny, but disappeared into the trees. Walking up to where I *thought* he had been, I couldn't find any sign of him. Meanwhile, 30yds away, Kaitlin says, "I've got blood!" Sure enough, there was a tiny, pea sized drop of blood. 15' feet away, another drop.... 20yds, and it's a stready drizzle 60 yds, and it's really draining out of him

That's funny about the lucky clothes. I have a hickory shirt that I tore the sleeve dragging out a buck a few years ago, it has been lucky to me ever since.

I have a McFarland Cascade hat that brings me lots of luck. I didn't wear it during the early season. Thanks for the reminder.

Been lucky, a few times.

My rules:
1) Hunt quality areas, which can produce and hold quality animals.
2)Don't hunt near roads.
3)Pass up small bucks.
4)Go balls out, even if it means being 4 miles into a wildeness at sunrise, blowing the seams out of your Danners on both feet in the process.
