Does anybody know if/when uncle george (Weyerhauser) is gonna reopen logging roads on the coast?

Not personally for hunting access, but when did they make this decision to close all their roads, it's not for fire hazard. BS

As of today most roads in the coastal portion of Weyerhaeuser holdings should be open to motor vehicle excess. Just because it is red dot does not mean you can not use their land. You just can not operate a motor vehicle. Unfortunately because of poor behavior from the public as a whole. We are losing access to these lands.

Ran into this problem during early archery elk season. lots of story's of people getting big fines for trespassing. My question is why the heck is state fish and game patrolling private property and writing tickets for trespassing on private land? Do we pay taxes so the state can patroll private property?? Things that make you go HMMMMM!!!!

A lot of those red dot gates on the coast is rayonier timber co. All the blue ones are. I tried to run behind one of them to get into the lower humptulips river area to elk hunt and a guy was guarding the gate to let the workers in then lock it up. I noticed almost all of rayoniers gates were closed everywhere. No reason anymore as far as fire danger, the guy didn't know why or when they open them.

Possibly the State has made an agreement to that effect in exchange for public access...

Many law enforcement agencies receive funding from companies for patrolling private lands. Many timber companies tend to contract with WDFW to patrol their lands since they are a state agency and most timber companies have land in multiple counties. Another example is how the US Forest Service contracts with county sheriff's offices to patrol USFS land in the busy months. What Weyerhauser and other companies do is make a contract with the law enforcement agency and come up with an agreement such as "WDFW will spend X amount of hours patrolling our lands and in return we will pay WDFW $X". Just about every large landowner in this state (such as USFS, BLM, Bureau of Reclamation, Hancock Timber, WA St Parks, etc) has a contract with law enforcement agencies (including WDFW)

It's actually a win-win for the landowner and the law enforcement agency. The landowner gets an extra law enforcement presence on their lands and the government agency gets more money.

The Warehouser lands we where hunting during early elk where being patrolled by Warehouse security folks. They even had a helicopter keeping an eye on things. Plenty of open gates but I'm sure glad I didn't drive up any of them as those that did didn't have a very pleasent day.

One thing I did learn though was that they will meet you and open the gate if you need to retrieve an animal which is pretty cool of them.

As a hunter gated roads are cool!!!

As the tweaker population grows I'd imagine we will see more gates.

The state gets the OK from the landowner. it's the Feds that you have to worry about. Don't ask how I know that one.........

rayonier has almost all the gates shut in this area right now. the one that bugs me is that they've got the gates closed on the huge chunk of land that's encircled by youmans road and between the EF and WF hoquiam rivers. there's good hunting areas in there but you'd have to walk in several miles. they were open(green dot) all winter but they shut the gates and put up red dots around july or so. i wouldn't mind walking in and bushwhacking but knowing my luck i'll get somewhere close scouted out, then they'll open it all up on the 16th.

what makes me scratch my head is that most of the rayonier gates on the east side of 101(wynoochee unit) are red dotted, but the ones on the west side(copalis) are all "striped"(no public access period). leased out? in fact, i'd say 90% of them in the whole copalis unit are closed off to all access(walk in or drive in).

Rayonier leased some of their land for hunting. Maybe that is the "striped" area.

I doubt they can allow walk in access on an area that has been leased.

It is a bummer to see the leasing thing coming/arriving.

According to hearsay from a while back, private forest land in WA got a tax break as "open space" in part because it was open to public access and limited uses like hiking and hunting. Since many private forest lands have restricted public access, or are just plain closed to it, I sure hope those lands are no longer receiving any special property tax breaks.
