I'm normally in AK later in the summer, but I will need to be in Homer sometime in the first two weeks of May, 2011.

What fishing opportunities will there be in that area during that time?

Thanks.

Jody:

You have the Anchor and Crooked River, both between Kenai and Homer. The Anchor is better know and has a good deal of bank acess. Both are small rivers in the Raging River class.

Deep Creek, the Ninilchik and Kasilof rivers all have small steelhead populations too. They'll all be downstreamers and you can't remove them from the water, but they're in there. Used to be some decent first-run king fishing in the Kasilof by the second week of May, but sadly, those days appear to be long gone.

Take the side trip to the Situk and hang with us at Glacier Bear Lodge, you will have a great time on the largest native run in the world, Steelhead that is!

I would love to take you up on that, the only problem is the planned trip is paid for by the company, don't think I could slip in the side trip.

Butt fishing will be starting, and Winter kings are alway's an option. Do a combo trip, for the best of both worlds.

Kasilof has some downstream steelhead and some early king fishing. Not really good, but you can pull a few out if you work at it.

Anchor is another option for steelhead and maybe a early running King. Will have to release either one, but it's better than nothing right?

If you catch the right day, Clam digging can be pretty good on any of the beaches from kasilof to Ninilchik.

Any steelhead in that neighborhood should be left alone. After a pressured fall and long winter, their journey back to the salt should be as unimpeded as possible in my opinion. They make terrible sport anyhow given their condition.

Tough time to be on the peninsula for trout and salmon. No trout fishing on the Kenai between May 2 and June 10ish. The world record king was caught in April...just saying.

Seems like the salt is the best bet for good odds at that time. Trout streams a few hours north in the Mat-Su are open and fish very well at that time of year.

'Bout a month too early ColeyG.... May 17, 1985 was the official date.

I stand corrected. For some reason I had april 29th in mind. Perhaps I am thinking of the earliest king on record? April 24th or close to that?

Regardless, slow fishin!

Do the smaller boats that launch from the beach operate at that time of the year, or is it a Homer only show that early?

Deep creek and Anchor beach launches open in May so there are options.
