I moved a while ago and my new address requires me to take an emissions test. I have never had to go through an emissions test so i was curious. I have a 96 cummins that has been turned up a little from Dynomite Diesel, it puts out a lot of black smoke when I lug it or get on it. Am I gonna have trouble passing emissions?

Most DEQ testing facilities check to see if your "service engine soon" or "check engine" light are on. If it's on, you automatically fail, if it's off, they most likely won't check any further. 1996 is the first year of OBD 2 diagnostics on board automobiles. OBD 2 systems self monitor emissions, so usually monitoring tail pipe emissions won't be needed. I own an automotive repair shop in Oregon, so perhaps Washington is slightly different.

thanks bd I dont know if there is a difference between Oregon and WA. I do know that a guy I work with has a 06 Cummins and he had the whole tail pipe monitor deal.

Last time I went in they hooked up to the plug under the dash. Things are changing. my 07 has not had to go in for a test yet.

Yes, that plug under the dash is the OBD 2 connector. Hopefully all will go nice and smooth.
