I just booked a 2 day trip out of westport for aug 17-19. It will be my first time out for albacore and have the option of bringing some of my own gear. I would like to know what type if any of rod, reels, and lures I should get. I dont want to get too carried away on the cost but am willing to spend a couple hundred bucks. Also what type of line should I go with? Any info on any gear fishing or other, that I may need for my trip would be great.

Thanks

If you are booked on two day tuna trip you will be fishing primarily with live bait.

Tuna gear is kind of a specialized due to the potential abuse that can occur.

If you want a good live bait setup for albi fishing start with a seven foot one piece pole that has a real soft tip but a real strong back. Lamiglas makes some real nice rods in this classification, but they can easily cost $200 if your not careful.

As far as a reel goes, a good choice, IMO, is a Shimano Tekota, 600LC. It is a level wind reel that is good for both albi and salmon fishing. Some will say that a level wind won't hold up but I have four of these reels that see multiple tuna trips every year without any problems, just make sure to keep your fingers away from moving parts and you will be fine.

Line, I like P-Line CXX Pro, 25lb, blue and stack as much as you can get on it, no backing.

Lures and gear, the boat will have live bait hooks but I would suggest bringing some of your own. You want #2, ringed hooks preferably. Also get some of the split, rubber core weights to ad to the line if the baits are not swimming deep enough to attract any takers, this sometimes is the difference between getting hooked up every time or not.

You can also get some jig heads that you put colored swim baits on for casting if you want to change things up, but most will stay with the live bait since is such a kick in the pants to do.

Good luck and remember to take lots of pictures during the battle, it is easy to forget until it's to late.

WD.
