I would also suggest that folks who are really concerned about what side of the reel someone else's handle is on, or what hand they hold their fishing rod in, might need to find a hobby...something to occupy their minds a bit.

I'm not one to judge others by how they hold their rod...

Just wondered if anyone had made the switch successfully as I am considering doing so for reasons cited above.

I think some people get used to holding their rod in a certain hand when they are a teenager and it's hard to break the habit.

Instead of replacing your whole arsonal of fishing reels try to learn to cast with your left hand. Thats what I did now I don't have to switch the rod after the cast. Problem solved.

I asked a steelhead once...and he said he didn't care which hand I cast with, or which one I retrieve with...and in his opinion, setting the hook with my left hand was sufficent.

Todd - your missing the point...if you are in the process of switching hands when he hits, or have to switch after you set the hook, you may not get a chance to ask mr Steelie anything.

i`m right handed and have never set or thought about setting the hook with my right hand, always on the left, it`s not that hard.

I think you're missing my point...I don't switch hands while there's a lure in the water, I'd never hold my rod in the same hand that the reel handle is on when the lure is fishing, and I can cast or retrieve with either hand, and in spite of my not-so-weak weak left arm having to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to setting the hook, my hookset is just fine.

No need to switch anything at my end...your mileage may vary.

Fish on...

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

You guys make it sound like switching the rod from hand to hand takes some immense amount of effort and a great deal of time.

It takes neither.

Fish a lefty if it suits you. Fish a righty if it suits you. Be really cool and fish both. We're not really going to debate this for 4 pages are we?

I think you have too much time on your hands, time, isn't that what they called it back then?
