What's a good leech pattern ? Sizes? Lookin' to tie me up a few. Gotta do something - cabin fever is startin' to take its toll!

I generally use woolly buggers for leech imitations. They also double for dragons and such.

I like olive, brown and maroon for colors. Also I tie one that has a hot chartreuse body. It takes it's share of fish also.

Listen to Zen! I also like a olive body WB with black hackle and black maribou tail.

I forgot to mention black, so don't think I omitted it for a reason.

The chartreuse ones I tie have a black or olive tail and black or olive palmered hackle. The guy who gave me that pattern liked to have colors contrasting the body color. He thought it added to the "fish attactiveness".

All I know is the first time I tried his fly, the fish pounded it for a whole 4 days. Eventually it was down to the body... and a straggly tail, hackle got ripped off.

Buggers are great. If you want to try something totally off the wall...

Devil's Advocate

Hook: TMC 200 (6-8)
Tail: Small rabbit strip (color of choice) and a small collar of same wound in a dubbing loop over thread wraps from tail. Krystal Flash is optional
Body: Tapered thread, thin in front widening aft. Mix 5 minute epoxy with a fine pinch of fine red glitter (or color of choice)

I sometimes will place an upward bend in the hook after tying the tail in place.

The best color combos I use are black/red, purple/red or white/pink (if you can find pink glitter)

A change to this pattern would be replacing the epoxy with glass beads.

This fly is great on an intermediate line at RF.

I prefer seal buggers (Denny Rickards pattern)

I like Olive/burnt orange hackle in clear water, black/purple hackle in off color water. This fly is tied with seal or fake seal body. It has natural movement even when it is at rest/falling. I've taken more large trout (over 5lbs) on these two patterns fished with an intermediate line than all my other patterns combined. My largest trout is 16.5 pounds taken and released with the olive and orange.
