Aaron, I've seen guys do it out of boats here in Elliott Bay...and in spite of asking around and randomly trying, I never was able to find any squid fishing in Bellingham during my years there.

If it turns out to be worth it this winter, I'll let you know...it really is a kick in the pants.

Fish on...

Todd

Anyone ever tried jigging at the Elliot Bay Marina? I heard a rumor that it was OK there. Worth a shot?

I usually shy away from the ones that have no power and don't allow gennies, and stand next to whoever has the brightest battery powered lights wink I usually can bribe them with jigs, since I have a box of about 100 that I've made, and I go thru about four or five per season...and they work.

That'd be fun. I'll bring the camera so we can get a grip 'n squish shot of Parker getting inked.
Shilshole/A dock is also a decent spot when you don't get kicked off the dock by a stoopid security guard grin That spot has power and already has mooring/nav lights pointed at the zone.

The best time I ever had squidding was once with My brother at Shilshole. We brought a 12'er and were putting a dent in it when a two geese started messing up our zone apparently looking for a handout and scaring the squid away. After a few minutes My brother and I both hucked our squid jigs in an attempt to scare him off, and I nailed him on the far wing and hooked the Goose with my basket of hooks on the jig. The goose took off and I got to play him for about 20-30 seconds mid flight..laughing hysterically the whole time which probably led to the mid air ldr..
We did get about 3-4 dozen that night.

Other than that kinda tomfoolery, squidding can be a bit dull, especially if they arent around. Going with fun people makes it more worthwhile to me...maybe with should have a PP squidathon and get a fat and famous 'thon organizer to organize? rofl

Todd is a squid flosser.... he even brings his Skok ladder to the dock.

I'm gonna have to try this with my girls. My boat has a big genset-powered under water light installed by the prior owner. Do those little suckers feed by shore or out on top of deep water?

I had the same trouble with a seal chasing the squid under my lights. He would mill around just outside the circle and every once in a while he would bomb through with a strafing run.

All I can say is that I had him on for a second... then he didn't come back.

Hmm.

I worked out of High School along the Shelton log booms some thirty years ago. They would chase food out of the water at night.

You could catch them on a day like today 130-160ft near Devils Head.

A few years ago, the wife of the store owner at Brownsville Marina fixed a green salad. She sliced squid into thin strips, put them in a collendar and poured boiling water over them to cook them. Then on top of the salad. Squid louie. It was tasty.

I still get out occasionally for squiddies. A ton of fun when they're in, but can be quite boring when it is slow. Seals also kill the action pretty quick. Should look into the legality of non-lethal determent against seals when squid jigging since it's permitted during salmon fishing.

Here is how it works at the Edmonds fishing pier. First, if you want to know if they are catching them there, go for a walk on the pier any time of the day. If you see a lot of large black spots several feet in diameter, then you know they are catching them. The black spots are squid ink from when people flop them on the pier.

November into December is a great time for squidding. If the fishing is good, there will be a lot of people there and many of them bring their own lights. Don't worry about getting your own lights until and if you get into it. I have had my best luck between 10 pm and midnight. I have caught them on all tides, but incoming to high is probably best. A really low tide is really bad.

Use light to medium spinning gear. Get several different kinds of squid jigs. Some jigs are hotter on one night or another. Use two squid jigs, you don't need more than that. Put your heaviest jig on the bottom, the next one 18 inches or so above that.

The squid come through in schools. If you see everyone just standing there then there are no schools. Just keep flipping your jig out every once in a while. If someone catches a squid beside you, then get out there cause a school is there.

People move around a lot on the pier to try to get ahead of the squid. Don't sweat it, you will get the hang of is. I usually don't move a lot, and let the squid come to me.

Flip the jig out, count to about 5 and then start lifting and dropping your rod. Don't rip it, be gentle. When you hook a squid, it is just a dead weight. Keep constant pressure on it, there are no barbs on the jigs. Sometimes you can catch two on the same jig, or one squid each on your two jigs. Vary your routine, but keep track of where you were when you hooked one. Get right back out there in the exact spot as soon as you can. Hang a bucket on the rail to drop your squid into, and also to mark your spot. If crowds aren't your thing, then do something else.

Some nights the squid don't show up. That is fishing

I have tons of squid jigs and squid jig hooks. Send me a PM and we can talk. I'd also be up for meeting people at a pier one night. This is prime squid fishing season but they are around all year. There are some really good posts about squid fishing. Squid are everywhere!!! Just get out and explore some areas. As it was stated earlier in the thread, look for the black ink spots on the ground you are walking for signs that squid were there LOL

Those of you that have done the squid thing and are planning on going soon, should post up when and where so the squid newbies (like me) can hook up and learn the ropes . . . . .
