Hewescraft Sportsman or Alumaweld Talon.

I know this has been debated a million times but need updated opinion from live users, etc. Will be getting a new or newer model.

Primary fishing spots with be downrigging Puget Sound for salmon, etc. Please convince me of one or the other.
a 16' tiller boat is preferred.

will decide end of month on one of the two. Motor used with be less than 60hp honda or yammy. No other brands will be considered, it will be either or of the two.

Thank you!

I'd sure give some consideration, if you can, to bumping the length to 18' and think about a windshield. You'll get a better ride and be dryer, too. My experience in PS and the Strait is that the wave frequency is such that you can get pretty wet in a 16'-17' boat.

Boat shows are coming up. Might find some deals there if you can wait a little.

If you're stuck with the shorter length, I'd buy a different brand of boat with an off-shore bracket to expand deck space.

I'd buy from 3Rivers...great service after the sale! Therefore Alumaweld

Hey Peter,
I've got to agree with 'bear.
It sounds to me like you're shopping a price point and perhaps an 18 is not currently on the table.
Since we are heading into winter and the "buying season" you have options and right now the new boat market is very competitive. Use that fact to your advantage and shop around.

I would suggest looking beyond the two boat brands you mentioned and definitely consider a windshield.

Think about the weight savings and reduced maintenance costs of a 2-stroke outboard as well. The two engine brands you mentioned are heavy, must-break'em-in-and-change-the-oil different colored four strokes.

Good luck and enjoy your boat shopping!

I agree with bushbear and tjn. Try to get an 18 footer. It won't be that much heavier, and you'll enjoy the extra room and sea worthiness. The longer length and extra width (?) won't require more horsepower under most considerations.

I would, however, stay with the 4 cycle engine. Just my opinion, but I love the quiet sound and the fuel economy. In Alaska for 8 summers I ran an 18 foot Klamath center console with a Honda 50 on it. It was a phenomenal fishing boat for two people - fished all day on 3 to 4 gallons of fuel. A little crowded with three. However, for fishing all the seasons around here, you will be happier with a boat with a windshield.
