I saw this on another board. Pretty cool and rare catch in the surf.

I've heard of hooking steelhead in the lagoons that form around some of the river mouths, but not in the actual surf. Low percentage or not, if you fish a place that fish will eventually swim past, it's likely you'll hook one eventually.

Oh thats nice.

My fishing buddy tells me of a BIG steelie taken years ago by his dad out of La Push.

Were taking a 20+ chromer, & on a trolled herring to boot.

That is pretty awesome. I once caught coho in the surf at a place called Volcano Bay in the Aleutians. One day when the sun was behind the waves you could see then in the curl. It was really cool but they did not bite well. As I recall we caught a few in the surf, but once they came in the creek it was lights out.

I grew up in Monterey and currently live here still. I have not only seen it,but Ive done it.

My first steelhead I ever caught was off the beach on a green half ounce krocodile spoon. The fish above was taken in the surf south of Carmel

With the drought type conditions we are having here in central california what happens is these fish get really antsy and start cruising looking for water. My buddy got one off the wharf on a blue fox when we were like 15 years old. I have seen many fish landed off that pier. As for the surf the mouths of the various little streams are where to go. Its a long shot but once in a while the conditions are right and you can get into a fish or 2. That day I got 2 i hooked 6 and it was just one of those days, those fish were actually staging in the surf to enter the lagoon of the river.

Agree. Shiny steelhead with breakers in the background is some crazy [Bleeeeep!] stuff.

I'm sure Opie is drooling and devising as I type.

A shaggy young pup I was in SE AK, little did I know what I had infront of me at the time, but truly appreciate the opportunity to see steelhead swim up through the estuary. No breaker fish for me but as you can see by the barnicles I was about a stones toss from the ocean.
I had one day boating out of one of our favorite criks that I stood on the bow and saw 5 steelies scatter infront of us... That was pretty amazing!

You bet we do but it is usually later in the year. Having a big striper smash your pencil popper at 5:30 in the morning in the surf as the sun is just coming up is something every fisherman should experience at least once in their lifetime.

So yesterday I went down to the pier and saw a little fish swim in the shallows. Missed it as it hit my red and white dardevle. Bout 3 pounds lol. I will try and get down there again this week before it rains. Once we get rain its a done deal for surf/pier .
