Hello, I am curious as to preferred weight of jig head you folks use when you use a twitch jig. I have looked in several stores and tackle shops and have come to the conclusion that I may need to start making my own as it seems most jigs on the market seem to be made for fishing under a float.
I am curious as to what mold should I buy to start this process?
It seems to me that maybe 3/4 ounce or something near this is the preferred weight. Anyone have some experience with an ideal weight that you casts decent and gets some distance?

Twitching Jigs and swinging spoons don't work so quit talking about them.
If I WERE to twitch a jig, I'd stick with a 3/8, 1/2, or 1/4 ounce for the water I like to fish. 3/4 ounce jig seems a tad heavy. And the same ones fished under a float can be used for twitching but your right, if you tie your own, the possibilities are endless and you can create/fish something that nobody else is using.
One more thing, fish will almost always take the jig on the drop, so give plenty of slack on the drop, and when you come up, if you feel any hesitation, it is generally a fish so continue forward on your upward motion to set the hook.

As someone who "loves to twitch"....let me tell you what and why I do what I do......
1. 30 or 40 pound Hi Vis Power Pro braid....does 2 thing, easy to see and strong to straighten out a hook if you get snagged on the bottom.
2. It really depends on the water but what we prefer is 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs, tied on Owner or Mustad hooks.......size to get to the bottom and the hooks to hold the fish when you get them.
3. Spinning reel and spinning rod......just works better than trying to use a level wind and casting rod. I have tried both.
Lot's of video's on You Tube and other sites.....Brad of Bradsjigs.com and Bill(me) had lot's of fun in 2009 and 2010...catching fish in November and December.....lot's we put on video.......I still go back and watch them.
2011 was not as good for salmon....sure we still got fish but just not as many.....
If the rain hadn't put the rivers "high and muddy" I'd be twitching the rivers that have any late Coho....

I Love to twitch also. I prefer the 1/2 ounce jig head and the matzuo hook in a 1/0 size. Spinning rods/reels are fine but I prefer a bait caster for more accurate casting. I can thumb a cast much more accurately in those REALLY TIGHT slots. Coho love wood, as you well know. I cast inches from that wood. Spinning reels are just a little harder to do that kind of cast. I also like the control I have with a bait caster. Caught a toad of a chrome coho yesterday, before the rivers blew, on a blue and white, with white head, 1/2 ounce. The weight is perfect for distance casting if necessary. Let me see if I can find my coho carnage thread from "that other site" http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=386448

1/2 and 3/8 oz , round head....if you want some there are some fly tyers that live on my street and do all mine for me for 3.00 bucks a piece. Quality work, I caught 41 salmon on one jig before the hook broke......let me know, they need the work.

Fly 3 bucks a piece? Damn, I gotta sell some of my stuff. It takes about 5 minutes to throw together a jig that will catch fish.

If yo don't want to go through all of the trouble to tie up a jig, coho will eat these too.  Pink silver flake and the white/fire are sweet.

Unless the water is really clear, I keep it simple with a B-2 squid crammed on a 3/8oz. head.
If it's clear, then the darker marabou bodies are my go to.

But there is still something about getting a fish on something you tied......... I get to select the color combinations that I think will work, given the water conditions. Also gives me a good way to kill a couple of hours.

If presented properly, a cigarette butt with some fingernail polish and a little krill scent works just fine, too.

If presented properly, a cigarette butt with some fingernail polish and a little krill scent works just fine, too. True. One day on the lower Deschutes a cracker pulled into the run with a yellow fiberglas rod and big spinning reel. He had some foam, cylindrical plugs "cut and painted red by his Grandpa". They were rigged like a Corky with a multi-strand assortment of thin yarn for a tail. It was squid-like and the plug wobbled in the current imparting a life-like action to the tail. The reason I know this detail is because the cracker slam-dunked me, busting 4 fish right in front of me. I had to know what he was doing.
