If you are paying a guide, what do you need with eggs?

Pretty much any time I am buying a service, rather than a product, I tip 20%...so if I bought a guide, that's what I'd do.

Fish on...

Tipping a guide working at a lodge (like mine) should always get a tip if they try hard and do a good job,,,,because they work for the lodge and not for themselves. Same for a waitress.
But a guide?

Guides that run their own business set their prices and should get paid based on the price they set, why would you tip a guide that is charging you $225.00 a day and it is his business? All the money is his. He sets what profit he wants by the price he charges. If he expects a $25.00 tip then he should charge $250.00. That $225.00 base fee says "I am taking you fishing and will do everything in my power to catch you fish"
Your tip to him should be a returning customer or word of mouth to use that guide.

Before you flame, I used to guide in the 80's and never accepted a tip. My job was to give the client the best experience I could for the price I charged and I did quite well just with the base fee.

Mr. Pinks and GBL make some good points.

Tipping fishing guides should be appreciated, not expected, nor automatically given. When/if applicable, it should be based on performance, not merely a standard rate.

I'm still waiting to see someone draw a clear, distinct line between what professions/jobs warrant tipping and which ones don't, and how/why those conclusions are drawn.

It is your fish, you paid to catch it. The eggs are yours.
If you choose to give them to the guide then great, but like the meat, if you choose to take it all home with you, it is your to do just that.

Not sure if it's legal for a guide to take freshly harvested eggs off the river without a hen on his punch card.

I don't know how common this is, but at a couple of lodges I fished in Alaska, the guides working for the lodge were paid minimum wage and really depended on tip income to make their summer.

One lodge actually had a posted tipping schedule for the guides, wait staff and housekeeper.

I found that a little strange to be told that we should be tipping in this manner.

I realize this is different from fishing with an independent guide.

If a guide or other staff member does a great job of making your trip a memorable one, tipping is appropriate. If it was a lousy experience, something I have yet to experience, I'd be inclined not to tip.

A couple of guides I've fished with many times became close personal friends and never expected a tip, but we always made a point of picking up breakfast or dinner the day we fished.

Since I am a working photographer, I always try to give the guide or friends that take me in their boat a set of photos of the trip for personal use and promotion if they are a professional guide.

While this is getting off this thread, when fishing with friends who provide the boat, a contribution for gas is a given, one that is often refused, so I and my buddy will slip it on to the dashboard.

If it is a salmon fishing trip in the salt, I always expect to buy the bait, pay the boat launch fee if there is one, and bring snacks and drinks.

Yeah, I got a tip for a guide: Take Parker fishing.

He's dependable, he's reliable, he's got a good sense of humor, he's a good guy, your kids, wife, and dog will love him, he's a good fisherman that catches fish, he's fun to fish with, he brings all his own gear, he brings is own bait, he'll bring you bait when none can be found, he'll offer to row your boat (guide beware on this one) and let you fish, he'll fix all your computer issues, and more importantly, he re-books multiple trips year after year after year.

He knows how to do the work if you take him shrimping too... Since I doubt I'll be able to, keep this in mind come May.

No matter what don't let him eat a shrimp raw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.
