I know some folks here use it for various applications and I've always been curious to try it.... My application would be for Puget Sound salmon/lingcod on standard levelwind reels, have been a PLine CXX or Maxima UG guy on most of my setups for the past few years, but after ripping all the mono off my old reels, I'm considering tossing some high vis green stuff on a reel or two to try it out...

Curious what folks here say about the advantages/disadvantages of this color line.... The adventurous side in me wants to try it, but I can't figure out why....

That was my primary concern... If I'm going to troll around all day for a bite or two, the last thing I want to do is jeopardize my chances at those few hits

Hi-Vis line ?

Depends on the application.
Depends also on the need.

Forward trolling = not needed.
Backtrolling = arguably helpful and easy to tie in a "normal" leader.

Gin clear water, slow presentation = not wanted.

Fast, aggressive, hardware presentation = By the time they see it, they're ridin' it.
Book it.

IMO, there are plenty of good applications for high vis line but for what you mentioned, you'll get zero benefits. If you were CASTING to lings, it would be a different matter.

No reason for hi-viz on the salt, where most of your line is in the drink. Probably more important than visibility on the salt is durability, abrasion resistance and minimal stretch. One reason I would not use either of the lines you mentioned, even though they are both high quality lines. PLine CX or Maxima Chameleon are much better choices within those brands. There are a lot of others as well, especially if you plan on using downrigger clips. In general, I do try to keep leader visibility down, even using Floro in some cases, but for the most part these fish are not line shy at all, something that has been proven to me more often than I care to admit.

Hi-viz lines do have great advantages for river fishing or casting whenever line control is paramount or you have as much, or more, line out of the water as under it. Advantages for float fishing and back trolling are obvious, but Hi-viz can also aid in drift fishing as well, where strikes can often be seen long before they are "felt" by simply observing line movement where line enters the water. Something bass and warm water fisherman seem to understand a lot better than most salmon/steelheaders.

I've used hi-viz Berkley Big Game for years on my salmon trolling reels.

No downside IMO. You've got a fish thats going from one side of the boat to the other with a seal in hot pursuit. One hand is running the kicker, with a net in the other. Its far easier to keep track of where the line is at with hi-viz.

LOL.

Might also help to keep your line out of the kicker prop if you are socked in off the PA Humps and can barely see your hands, let alone your line.

Or even help to keep your lines from tangling as you do-si-do through the currents off PNP.

Are these "good applications" secret ?
I would like to stop getting "zero benefits".

LOL... I just realized it kind of looks like I was replying to you and not knucklebustersonly. I was referring to salmon trolling and/or vertical ling fishing.

I like it for spooning, float fishing, pulling plugs, and casting for lings. I think we're pretty much on the same page.

Thanks all for the advice...

@ Mooch, what makes CX better than CXX?

What are other folks running on their levelwinds/knucklebusters for line, mostly trolling on the DR and some jigging for lings/salmon....

Uhhhhhh, nothing. Apologizes, I got it bass backwards. You've got it right. CXX is tougher. CX is softer for spinning.

Worrying about the mainline is un-necessary, IMO.
Only when jigging with small jigs or using small bait could it be a factor, but the leader will get the effect you want. With 50 lb line from license plate flasher to fly/hootchie, who cares? Watch the video's of fish strikes....does it look as though the fish are picky? And halibut or ling cod......you gotta be kidding.
Don't waste your time even thinking about line color.....it's a non-factor.

most of the locals around here use hi-vis braid in the summer...doesn't seem to hurt their catch rates any smile

As "one of the locals"......use HI Vis Power Pro 30 or 40, Year around....

1. When fishing spoons......right to the spoon, no leader

2. Twitching for Coho.....right to the jig, no leader

3. Right now for winter run steelhead....use leader, because I use pre-tied "rags", puff balls, or corkies with eggs or prawns.

4. Summerrun steelhead......bobber and jig......use leader.

I've found that with the 40#...I have a lot less "braid wrap around the tip".

I use the hi-vis braid over here for catfish in the summer sun. Somedays they bite real light and you can see the slack in the line start to tighten up before the rod tip moves. In the intese sun, heat, and dark canyon walls, mono and even the dark braids just kinda dissapear. Also helps when fishing a couple of people with a couple of rods. Lets you see where everybody is at and avoids tangle time.

The fish might even like the colored line better! They do bite spinners and all kinds of bling. For sure the colored line helps keep tangles down. You can see it and stay out of trouble.
