so, i'm beginning researching chartplotters for my boat. this would be used primarily in the salt, typically puget sound. i would like to get one in the 4-5" range, as both my budget and space limit the size of the unit. i'm not looking for a combo sounder/GPS as i already have a nice wide screen humminbird ff. bottom contours (quality of map) , ease of use, useful features will be considered. networking, interfacing with other devices, splitting the screen are things i don't think i'll really consider. if I can spend less than $500 it would be a bonus.

question:
are the built-in coastal maps good enough, or do i need to budget for a navionics/Cmap/etc chip as well?

thanks,
willy

The Sea Kitten came with a Lowrance lms337. I know this is discontinued, but if you could find one on the secondary market, I would strongly reccommend it. I don't know how I ever got by without this tool.

There is a used G 2210 on the sister board, ifish, about your price range.
Interfacing with a DSC VHF is good idea for talking with the CG in case of emergency on the Sound. 2cents

I have messed around with Lowrance GPS/Sonars for a long time. My most recent is a 339c iDF. This year I bought a Raymarine E90W with GPS receiver. What an amazing upgrade.

I have a Lowrance 337 that has a dim display (needs repair) that I'd be willing to sell.

I am interested in a Garmin as well, do any of you have experience with the 3205 ?

It is a "old" model that is on sale for around 450.00 for my 16 ft skiff, looks like a bargin.
