Just finished reading a biography of Winston by William Manchester.
The two volumes were titled "The Last Lion."The first volume, "In Search of Glory," was about his youth and Military service. The second, " Alone" was about the run up to WW2 and his taking
on the position of Prime Minister of Great Britain at age 65.
I have always know of the stupidity of Neville Chamberlain but I
never realized he had so much help. The politicians did every
thing in the power to condemn England to death and didn't even
know.
Baldwin,Cadogan, Chamberlin, Halifax, Henderson and more were
so incompetent one wonderes that the Allies survived.

Obama would have understood The Phony War.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

"We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle."

Bessie Braddock: “Sir, you are drunk.”
Churchill: “Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.”

"My wife and I tried two or three times in the last 40 years to have breakfast together, but it was so disagreeable we had to stop." (one version)

"There is nothing more exhilarating than to be shot at without result."

Not a bad guy, for a Brit. wink

False.
Quote:
"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain." There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University makes this comment: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

From Wikiquotes:
Quote:
According to research by Mark T. Shirey, citing Nice Guys Finish Seventh: False Phrases, Spurious Sayings, and Familiar Misquotations by Ralph Keyes, 1992, this quote was first uttered by mid-nineteenth century French historian and statesman François Guizot when he observed, Not to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is proof of want of head. (N'être pas républicain à vingt ans est preuve d'un manque de cœur ; l'être après trente ans est preuve d'un manque de tête.) This quote has been attributed variously to George Bernard Shaw, Benjamin Disraeli, Otto von Bismarck, and others.

Sharing the truth won't matter...they'd turn right around and share it as attributable to WC again tomorrow.

They've been doing it for 60 years while either knowing, or not caring, that he never said it.

The truth? GMAFB.....it's attributed to WC everywhere. 1 site out of....oh all the rest and you're ready to swallow his load?

My people attribute it to WC and you've been wrong since birth..so I'll stick with anything but what you claim as truth.

As for gogirly.....Even though you're old enough to have heard it first hand, you're not smart enough to know chit from bean dip. But at least you found one site out of a hundred to distort your world view. It only took ya' a few of hours.

There are a few problems with that quote...

One...it's a bullschit premise, to beging with.

Two, dimwits attribute it to someone much smarter than they are, hoping that it will be taken more seriously than they ever will be.

That being said...they'll keep on saying it. Premises one and two have never stopped them before.

Fish on...

Just the war years Todd. The Parliament sacked him as soon as he
had managed to save England's derriere. Most of the members
of his party feared him and were glad to get rid of him. However, he
is the only man, at the time, who could find the English backbone
and make them fighters for another go.
His mutual respect with FDR allowed them to destroy the tyrants.
With Chamberlin, Halifax, Baldwin, Cadogan and the rest of that
ilk in charge England was nearly a Third Reich satrap.

Get a kick out of folks trying to pigeon hole Winston. He was what
he thought was right at the time. He gave the coal miners in England
some of the best breaks they ever got from goverment. Does that make him a Socialist?

One of those fellas said, and I don't have it verbatim. The hell with
your principles, stay with your party. We have a bunch of those
idiots, ones that put party before country.
