just give up steelheading.
I did a couple of years ago. Ya I miss is, but for me it was the right thing to do.
Seriously? I could never do it. Call me selfish. I love fishing too much. It is essential for my spirit. Same thing with music. I do what I can to give back to the resource. Where do you draw the line? I am not gonna berate you for your decision not to fish. I just cant see doing it. The fish stocks will not magically recover just because I decide to quit fishing. My advice is to get involved, join an organization, and do habitat restoration, try and make a difference.
I didn't say I gave up fishing, I've stopped steelheading. And I said nothing about what I am doing to make a difference. I agree getting involved is more effective than pissing and moaning on the internet.

Moravec- Yes, it is sad that I had to buy a lodge to get that type of Steelhead fishing every year. It is a passion, not a huge profit center as any lodge owner will tell you. We have taken pride in keeping the prices down so it is within reach of most everyone. I welcome you to come up and experience something 99% of Steelheaders have never had. I am sure Mr. Vedder can give you a pretty good idea of what it is like and what that watershed can produce. I wish our own agencies would spend a few months up there and see how it can be done. ...I didn't mean for that to sound like an attack...if it sounded as such I apologize...just wanted to say that for the average die-hard steelheader, "weekend-warrior" status means getting their fishing fix on local waters...which are in great peril. I am green with envy for those that spend a week up in No.BC or up at a paradise like GBL, but for me as with many that have engaged in this conversation, we fish the waters we love...which are those that are close to home.

Listen - it's extremely stupid...but its the law. Until the law is changed, some guides will continue to kill nates to appease their clients. The client is always right (even when they are wrong). They spend big dollars to fish the OP and want "something to show for it". If it's still legal to kill a nate, they catch one and insist on keeping it...and the guide doesn't let them keep the fish, then its game over for the guide. No tip, no repeat booking. I have had customers and employers ask me/tell me to do things that were legal but, I felt, unethical. Each time I have refused. It cost me good job at one time too. Walk the talk or the words are just BS.

Here's a thought for you crackers how about total closure on certain watersheds period odd years or such and rotating a schedule like Bogy closed for 2 years then reopened no fishing period, then open it up and closing the solduc for a couple years , etc., Hoh, Clearwater just a thought to see what would happen!!!PEACE this plan would never F'n work! makes to much sense.

Hate to poop in your punch bowl, but Cedar River has been closed to steelheading since 1992; that's twenty years. In recent years it has only been open for a selective gear CnR trout fishery during the summer months. Check out this page to see how well that's been working... http://www.seattle.gov/util/About_SPU/Wa...Trout/index.htm

Any guide that keeps a native is only cutting his nose off to spite his face! I don't give a sh!t about the reasons (excuses) that people give for retaining a wild steelhead. THERE IS NO GOOD REASON OR EXCUSE FOR KEEPING A NATIVE STEELHEAD! If I hear of guides keeping them I will make sure that they will be exposed on this site. If I decide to fly to Patagonia for steelhead, brown trout and rainbow should I tell my guide that I deserve to kill one since I came all that way? He would tell me to go get &%$$%##! The same applies all over the world. Why is it different here? There are fishing destinations in places where the people don’t even have a high school education yet they can see the advantages of catch and release and conservation of the resource. AGAIN, why is it different here?

I've seen Kings in the 45-50 pound range in the Cedar as recent as 1983. I wonder how many Kings spawn there now?

Soon, when a steelheader becomes President, we will invade Canada.....................or just install a puppet regime.
On that note, I'd like to announce my candidacy for the Office of the President of the United States of America. I will seek the Presidency on the "Steelheader Party" ballot, and since I am the only one in that party at the present, I declare myself the nominee. I take PayPal. Thank you. Fish on... Todd
