How did you mount your rod holder to your motor cowling? I like the idea and want to put a rod holder on my main to get better separation for the offerings.

My sled has a yamaha jet that I wouldn't mind drilling into for mounting the holder.

Do you use a backer plate or just washers under the cowling?

Thanks much,

my ride:

Thanks doc!

I'll get some big washers from the hardware store tomorrow.

Best,

Best,

Just one more thing to note. Both motors I have done this to already had cowlings with some sort of extra reinforcement. Proceed with caution if your old Yamaha cowling is strictly one ply

The first time I did this was on my old Merc 200 hp 4-stroke that had a cowling with a thick 2-3 inch midline ridge beefed up for structural rigidity. I drilled thru that ridge to mount the rodholder.

The second time was on my current 225 E-Tec which has a double-walled cowling to reinforce the top. I also re-contoured the bottom of the FOLBE pedestal mount to match the slight curvature of the cowling to eliminate any focal pressure points.

Good timing, I was going to drill it out now, but thought I'd look again here.

The Yamaha is just the one ply top. I was a bit worried about the attachment. The rear of the motor has a cast aluminum "handle" on top that would probably provide better support, but I don't know if it's too far back to access easily. I'll look into that or some aluminum backer plate under the one ply.

Later,
