My dad recently gave me a nice model 70 .270. It has your standard leopold vx 1 on it. It's sweet shooting gun and I would like to put an equally nice scope on it. I have a couple vx 2's but I would like to put a nicer 12 power scope on this gun. Any suggestions?

Congrats! If you're planning on chasing cloven hoofs with your new Winnie, a fixed 12x is too much of a good thing. I hear good things about a VX3 3.5-10x40 sitting in Talley L/W's. Further upgrades not required....

This is a very good choice for that rifle.

I used to have a straight 12x on .222 Varminter and it was fine for that.
Wouldn't want it for big game though.
My 6.5 - 20 is too much at 6.5 for cruising. 4x max for your low setting and preferably lower.

Here's a site that has a huge optics inventory. Just plug your data into the filters at the top and go straight to what you want...

A 3.5 x 10 or 4 x 12 in Nikon, Leupold, Vortex, Swarovski would be my choice for an every day hunting rifle before actually stepping up in price to a premium scope.

The rule of thumb is that price is directly proportionate to quality- you get exactly what you pay for in optics.

I have personal experience or owned of the above in various models and none mentioned have let me down.

Swarovski would be considered i high end premium scope tho... and is far superior to a Leupold, Nikon, or Vortex IMO...

Millett makes good scopes, but are more designated for tac applications and long range applications...

for the money, you cant really beat the Nikon Buckmaster scopes, atleast i think so... very clear, nice quality glass...

high end scopes in my eyes, are Swaros, Leicas, Ziess, Nightforce, Trijicon, Schmidt and Bender, and even Meopta in some cases, but not as high end as the others....

like stated, you get what you pay for, and a Leupold is probably the best option... for the money tho, like isaid, check out the Nikons...

I put them in order on purpose.

High end to me is over $1000 and I doubt that those would be better, if not overkill, for a daily shooter but to each his own.

Zeiss, Schmidt and Bender, Nightforce, US Optics etc.

Personally prefer Leupold glass on a hunting rifle...

and Leica 10x glass in hand to acquire targets for same....

Dont over look Burris scopes. Same quality as Leupold and Nikkon and similar prices. I have had Burris on my rifles for almost 20 years now and cant complain a bit. I was just in the market for a new scope and wanted to get something different for a change but Burris had a 6.5 x 20 50mm ob for a screeming deal and I couldn't pass it up. The glass is good, reticles dont go rogue on ya, and they cant even spell fog.

If time is on your side, you can find 'em on eBay. Also, the best new price I've found is at

Cove Creek Outfitters

They have gloss too, if you are so inclined....

I re-glassed my 270 Winchester M-77 a few years ago. Looked at the Leupold Vari-X III, Burris Signature Select, Weaver Grand Slam, Bushnell Elite 4200, Zeiss Conquest & I'm sure I'm forgetting a few others.

Really took my time looking them over & went outside and had my hunting buddy hand me one after the other for quick looks.

I really liked the Burris Signature Select in 3-10X 40mm the best & went w/ that one. You need to look them all over & see what works for your eyes & budget.

Vortex Viper. Love my 2.5-7. Far better than any Leo I have owned and better than my Zeiss Conquest.
