I fished them a few times in Chelan. Right on the bottom in over 100 feet of water ( I think around 130) in front of 25 mile on the far side. They look a lot like an eel . Good eating, but not much over 4-5 pounds on average. We used jigs with a chunk on herring for bait. Fished in the daylight.

It was legal to set out a couple lines with up to 3 baits on them over night on Chelan up until a few years ago. I was told it isnt now. They have more of an eel look to them than Lingcod and are not the toothey critters most of us know. Smell like hell when you clean one but do taste good. no more set lines in Chelan, it was in an issue of Northwest Sportsman last year i think....

Never caught one but would like to add it to my list someday. Just did a google image search and some of them can get pretty large.

Me too Coho! Anoka high school. I hit the Oregon trail a little later than most of the other clan though! Played hockey every day in the winter growing up, good times on the river and ponds for sure.

Ling cod is Hexigramidae, same as Greenling. They are not closely related to Burbot, and they are not sculpins.
I hate to admit it, but RH got me on the family name for Burbot though, The order is Gadiformes, but the family is Lotidae. It has been 35 years since I took fish 401, my bad.

I think the Miss Eelpout picture needs to be bigger since they don't look slimey or disgusting.

Don't know if what I did counts as "fished" for burbot, but I went all set-linning for them in Lake Kaches. I don't recall how many hooks I was allowed by law at the time, but I basically set a long 100lb. mono line in the lake between two buoys, with baited hooks on the line at set distances. I used herring chunks on for bait on 3/0 octopus hooks. All the baits were eaten but only managed to bring two fish to the boat, one being a big burbot and the other being a huge squawfish. If I had to do it again, I'd use circle hooks instead of octopus hooks as I bet more of the fish would have stayed on the hook. It was something to do while we were camping up there on the lake years ago. Ended up limiting out on kokanees (fish, not the beer) most of the days. K flies tipped with maggots behind a little chrome flasher always get's it done for kokanee. It has been 35 years since I took fish 401, my bad. I think it's been about 20 years for me. Ted Pietsch was the instructor.......he's still at the UW today.
