Want to can some salmon up and going to buy a pressure cooker. Wondering if all pressure cookers are created equal? I only remember my Grandma"s cooker she used to can garden veggies. Any brand/type to purchase would be appreciated. Have some recipes from this board to try. Thanks.

I have this one, and can everything from berries to veggies to salmon to tuna in it.

Those All American's look nice, but I have yet to have an issue with my 23 quart Presto in 16 years of use. @ $99 each, you can buy two Presto's. Very handy when canning a mountain of tuna. Easily does 24 1/2 pint jars, and if you use the short round jars, 36 is possible.

Same model I've been using for over 25 years and I have an older model that was my Grandfathers, that still works like brand new. The definition of Bullet Proof.

All Amercican is the best out there from what I have heard from buddies who own one.........However I own two of the 23qt Presto's and have only had to replace one $10.00 gasket in 20 years of canning.I'd just get what Todd has mentioned unless it's going to become a year round hobby.Good luck,
SZ

PS,I canned 11 tuna 108 jars down @ B-10 last week in my camp site.....I was the only one in camp with a canner. All 44 tuna got canned in 4 day's by this one and only canner with out any issues other than time.....Dam relatives need to man up and get one for next year.

I now do two of the Presto 23qts on a camp stove.

Tried, once on a crab cooker, and the bottom bubbled out 'cause it got to hot in one spot. Put it on a cast iron plate if you decide to go that route. 2cents

Thanks for all the input! I had a gift card through Amazon, so I splurged and bought the All American Pressure Canner model 921. Should have it in a week.

FYI

i looked at both of these, as i'm contemplating purchasing one in the near future. the all-american is not recommended for use on flat-top stoves, it's too wide and heavy for the glass surface (i have one of these). presto for me.....

I also have a "flat-top" stove....

I use a crab cooker......works better if you don't cook some things in the house......tuna fish, is one of those......

I start them on a crab cooker (takes just a few minutes), then keep temp and pressure steady on a camp stove.

Every canner, and every website, says don't use a crab cooker type burner...so, of course, I don't...I use two of them. If you can't keep an eye on your canner and keep it at the proper temperature on an outside burner, you probably can't handle it on a stovetop, either.

Fish on...

Its a great excuse to stay in one place and drink some beer. getting the pressue settled down is the tricky part, but once you get that handled, you just have to keep an eye on it.

Presto and All American are both good. Presto is less expensive but you need to replace rings periodically.

I have the same one you bought, All American 921.

Both manufactures say you should have the pressure valve checked periodically for accuracy so you stay at or above the needed pressure (10#).

Best,
Rick
