Fished the Satsop yesterday and saturday for Sea Runs. Great time fishing, saw a couple deer, nice weather but I was feeling off. First good run of water, BLAM big swirl, rod bent, hook out. Ok, bad start but figured I would get more, after all, the October caddis were thick like Mosquitos.

As the day goes on, blam, blam, blam, fish on, fish off, fish on, fish off. Now I have landed plenty of fish in my young life, however I neglected to check my hooks.

Last night, I started out the same, fish, fish fish, off, off, off! (The Sea Runs are thick by the way!) So after 3 hours of fishing, I get out my file and go to sharpen my hook, but it is plenty sharp! I look closer and find the hook slightly askew! Bent it back, one cast, blam! Fish on! Stayed on, nice 14" little SRC!

Just make sure to not be stupid like me and fishing right now is awesome!

I have made a similar mistake a number of times. I fish a fly called a Dolly Lama for rainbow in the spring and fall. The commercially tied versions (picture an articulated bunny leach of sorts with trailing hook) are prone to having the hook fall off after having used it for a while. A number of times now I have missed four or five good whacks before I stopped to check the hookless fly out. Duh...

Reminds me fishing with a guide, he keeps yelling at you to set the hook. You set the hook, no fish, over and over again, until the guide decides to inspect your fly and find out there is no hook on your fly.

Happens to all of us, I guess.

My favorite was on the Dean this year where I got slammed 4 times, then actually felt the fish "chewing" on the fly, come free and get slammed twice more. I pulled the fly up and the hangback hook was looped over the line by the eye. I was shocked that a fish would just keep hammering a fly over and over and over across half a swing to the hang down. I probably should have just slowly stripped it back to me and the fish would have been at my feet.

Not checking your hook a whole day and into the next fishing day is upping the game though, jgreen! smile

P.S.
I prefer your name in phone book form.
