Washington promotes reductions in bass, walleye, catfishatfish FISHING — A little more pressure will be applied to nonnative fish species such as bass and walleye if fishermen accept fishing regulations changes for 2013 proposed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The agency is taking public comments through Dec. 15 on a range of proposals, including suggestions to increase or remove daily bag limits on nonnative fish species such as smallmouth bass and walleye that prey on imperiled native salmon and steelhead. Just another prime example of the nitwit WDFW and crooked State of Washingtoons Politicians pandering to the Tribal Casino's. If WDFW would take a firm grip on their collective ears and pull their heads out into the sunshine, they could/should develop this fisheries as a Midwestern Tourist Draw. Then they would not have to take any Tribal Casino Bribes. Wouldn't that be refreshing for a change.
And do NOT be the dummy and pipe up with OH THE EVIL SALMONOID PREDATORS!!! Do a freedom of info request to the Bonneville Power Administration and get a FREE copy of their Salmonoid Predator study from the Mid 1980's, very enlightening, Actually Walleye Help Salmonoids drown stream migration by preying on squawfish almost exclusively. The real reason those very crooked Tribes want this (and they did propose it) regualtion is so that they could (exclusively) develop this as a COMMERCIAL FISHERY. And we all know that Sports Fishing Economics always outperforms/trumps any form of Commercial Fishery.

JohnQ 1) Who the hell actually wants to draw midwesterners out here? I'm from the midwest and I'm glad I got away from most of those people.  2) A commercial bass and walleye fishery in WA? REALLY? Salmon is a way more valuable product.

Oh man, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that WDFW lifts limits on bass, walleye, and cats. Nothing better than a bucket full of dead bass for the fish fry or crab bait. My mouth is watering! Go WDFW Go!

If I correctly remember the results of the study that John Q references, the worst predator to our Columbia River salmon was the cutthroat. That didn't make me too happy, because I love cutthroat trout. It seems counter intuitive that smallmouth bass wouldn't be a significant factor in salmon depredation, but you only have to look at the strength of the summer steelhead run in the John Day River to begin to examine the factors. Then look at the building strength of the salmon/steelhead runs to the upper Columbia all the while swimming through millions of smallmouth bass and other fish like walleye that weren't there in nearly as significant numbers in the early 1970's when our upriver runs began to go in the tank.
If I remember correctly, walleye were a slightly larger consumer of salmon , than smallmouth. But I was really surprised at the study's findings of how minimally smallmouth affected salmon/steelhead populations - if you can believe the study.
Why not have out of state people come to Washington to fish; leave their money and go home? Sounds like good economics to me.

JohnQ must be another mid-easterner transplant wanting to turn Washington State into a walleye destination.
Sorry, dude. No one gives a damn about walleye and bass out here. Either go back where you came from or deal with how things are done in the PNW. Maybe you should go spend some time in eastern washington. I know from growing up over there and visiting quite a few times a year that far more people are targeting walleye and bass than salmon over that way. Easy to have a say when it doesn't effect the area you fish.

I read through the study and it states that the largest source of predation is most often squawfish but that it does vary a bit by season. It also points out that bass and walleye predation are non-neglible. HOWEVER, it's s study only on predation, it doesn't talk about the other effects up and down the food web of having these non-native species in our waters.
In general, the history of non-native species introductions is terrible in many areas and for many species. I just can't see a good justification for wanting to keep these fish around.

Oregon stopped a similar proposal 1 or 2 years ago.
IMO it will solve nothing. Smallies and walleye have been around the NW for 100 years. One only has to look at the Umpqua and John Day rivers.
The Umpqua is flat out loaded with smallmouth, yet Oregon decided that wild steelhead retention was fine.
Would there be more salmon and steelhead if there were no bass? Probably so, but removing them would be impossible and the bass fishery down there brings in alot of money to the local economy.
I do my best to eat as many as I can when I travel down there.
In eastern Wa. the number of warm water anglers probably outnumbers the salmon and steelhead anglers. I doubt this proposal will go far.

The sampled stomach contents of walleye broke something like 88% Squawfish, 5% sculpin, 4% misc., and 3% salmonoids. And something even the BPA did NOT like but accepted was that one of the conclusion of the study -- Walleye enhanced the Salmonoid productions and returns. But then again Pungent Sounders who know zip let their interchangeable body parts do their talking.

Yes, and the environmentally clean greenbacks that come with it. And it particular, focusing those green backs away from the Stooooooooooooopidity of Pungent Sound to east of the Cascades where it is really needed and appreciated School is over, you flunked.
