Road flares are good as you can start a fire under wet conditions if need be.

Damn Coley u are the man, I 2nd you as group leader. Very good point of letting someone know what your float plan is. Lots of good stuff guys. Baby wipes and
Flares. I also keep some wd40 or some other lubricant in the boat for sqeaky rollers oar locks etc.

Anise oil (or similar) will work for various squeaks as well.
Gorilla Tape (extreme duty duct tape) is good to have around.
Very sticky stuff but more expensive than garden variety duct tape.

A roll of TP pretty much covers my bases. Nothing more of a life saver when a 3-alarm dookie comes a call'n.

Seriously though, there are some good lists mentioned above so no need by me to repeat. Only thing I can think to add is keep it compact, in 1 consistent spot and easy to access in a hurry....sometimes, seconds count!

That is exactly the type I have around...it's about ten times as good as regular duct tape, and at $8 a roll it is still a bargain IMO.

Fish on...

+1 on the gorilla tape and another one for Eric's accessibility point!

I have no idea...but I suspect it would be a good short term fix for about anything that leaks or is busted.

Thanks for putting this thread up. It made me re-evaluate what I carry which is not much. I would emphasize though the need for a sharp knife at the ready just in case one needs to cut the anchor rope ASAP.

I nominate Todd as team leader if Coley is busy. Ripple not sure if anyone mentioned an anchor knife yet, but anchors dropping in rapids or heavy flows are a boat killer. DO NOT PUT A KNOT IN THE END OF YOUR ANCHOR ROPE! I also have a pair of scissors attached to my hip. Came in very handy on a recent drift when we had to skirt the brush in fast water and one of the rods got caught up.

Ripple your very welcome. I do not make posts often, but thought this was an important topic. As evidenced by the responses you can see we have some very experienced boat handlers on
This board. Thanks for all the input guys.

Whistle. which actually required by law in Oregon. I have it on a lanyard around my neck along with my keys.

Boaters flare gun. to shoot at the assholes that keep fishing while someone is in trouble.

Cell phone in a ziplock. it does not have to be activated to call 911. I have an old one that works everywhere.

I have a dry bag with towels, sweats for 3 people and an instant fire:
matches, newspaper and a wad of kindling.
If I go over, the drybag is what I will grab for. I carry enough for the average DB boat party in case I come upon a wet crowd in the winter.

Sticking your clothes in a vacuum packer will make them amazing small.

Very good suggestion on the knife. Again, if it ain't handy in a hurry, it is probably worthless.

I am a big fan of the NRS Co-pilot knife for river based applications among others. I keep one on my life vest and one on my chest harness for helicopter short hauling. The co-pilot has a couple I other handy features built in like an O2 bottle wrench and beer bottle opener. The quick release sheath is slick and hasn't failed me yet though it looks sketchy.

Nice little tool ther Coley. Looks similar to some knives i have attached to our bcd's. Have not dove in a couple years, might need to reassign them. What is helicopters short hauling?

Since we are talking safety, well Fly obviously has pussy on the brain, which I can't blame him for. I myself have contemplated whether steelheading or sex is #1 on my list. If I was still single and had to chase the pune I am sure I would give up a fishing trip to get some, but since I've been married for nearly 25 yrs I don't let that get in the way of chasing stelhead.

Back to my question. How many people honestly wear a life jacket at least most of the time while fishing from a riverboat? And those that do, what kind of pfd are you using? In all honesty in my boat we keep them at the ready and put them on when comming into some hairy water. I have considered getting the self inflating collar type pfds in hopes of being able to fish comfortably while still having some protection from drowning if something should happen. I know we would not have donned our life jackets prior to the downed infamous alder on the nooch. In fact we did that drift several days prior to the first boat going down and thought nothing of it. If it was our oar lock that had broken, we could have very well been one of the downed boats.
