Don't rack your pump shotgun for sound effects.

Telling the bad guy where you are,what you're armed with,and that you aren't ready to dance is a bad idea.

Given the variables in a HD situation (bad guy getting ahold of a family member for example), it'd be slugs from the get go.

Also, less drywall holes to patch.....

Personally, it's a pistol.
But there is just no denying that the wonderfully distinctive sound of a 12 ga. pump slamming a round home gets high honors.

Once the bad guys hears it, you are already to dance. That is what pumping it does.

Sound or no sound, none of this is any good unless you practice it like a fire drill. I've had my wife go through some drills when I'm going to be gone for a while. I explicitly tell her to make noise when she slams the round home and then announce to the bad guy that she is armed with a 12ga, knows how to use it, will use it, and tell the guy to GTFOOMH now. This is assuming the bad guy can hear anything with two protective dogs giving him the drill. You're never more proud of your wife when she can get the shotgun out and ready to rock-n-roll from the time it takes to get from front door to bedroom.

I think I am still alive because my X didn't know how to use a shotgun...
