Regs go to press tomorrow. Some salmon highlights....

MA 2-2 open Sept 16-Nov 30... 3 fish bag... min size 12"... IOW, anything over 12" that you keep counts against your 3 fish bag. One king allowed Sept 16-22.

Mainstem Chehalis opens Sept 1... 3 adult bag, jacks are fair game (even king jacks).... 2 may be wild coho. RELEASE ADULT KINGS Sept 16-Sep 30. One adult king allowed Oct 1- Nov 30 up to Porter deadline. From Dec 1 thru Jan 31, adult bag goes down to 2 fish, wild coho goes down to 1 and we go back to RELEASE ADULT CHINOOK and chum.

Humptulips... Sept 1-Nov 30 open all the way from the mouth up to the forks.... 3 adult bag, one wild coho allowed, one chinook allowed. From Dec 1 - Jan 31 the bag goes down to 2 adults, 1 king allowed, NO WILD COHO.

Wynoochee Sept 16-Nov 30 open to White Bridge... 2 adults, one wild coho, RELEASE CHINOOK.

Satsop Sept 16-Nov 30 open to 3 adults, 2 wild coho, RELEASE WILD ADULT CHINOOK (Hatch kings are fair game for retention as incidental by catch to targeting coho... please do not abuse this or we will NEVER get it back). Dec 1 - Jan 31 the bag goes down to 2 adults, one wild coho, RELEASE CHINOOK and chum.

Black Oct 1-Nov 30... 2 adults release kings/chum. Dec 1- Jan 31 only one wild coho, rlease kings/chum

Skook/Newaukum Oct 1-Nov 30... 3 adults, 2 wild coho, release kings/chum. Dec 1- Feb 28 bag goes down to 2 adults, only one wild coho, release kings/chum

All of the above salmon fisheries will allow the use of bait.... entire basin is single hook barbless. Night closures in effect for Hump, Satsop, Black, Skookumchuck, Newaukum

ENJOY THE BOUNTY, FOLKS! This is the best in-river season we've had in years!

PS... More details in the regs.

So...we can't target kings on the satsop. But allowed to keep them, if we happen to catch them. That makes no sense in wording it that way. As incidental by catch

Read it again.

It's a balls out fishery targeting a magnum-sized coho run.

Chinook will be encountered during that BOCF. If the king is hatchery, this provision gives you the chance to keep one.

Basically the same way we are treating the nets.... target coho, encounter kings, release the wild ones, bonk the odd hatch fish.

Good for the goose, good for the gander....

What is considered as targeting Chinook on the Satsop?

One might not be able to write a legal description that'd stick, but I guarantee you'd know it when you saw it.

Let's put it this way....

If your boat hooks 5 chinook in a row, odds are pretty good you ain't exactly targeting the more abundant coho.

Pick up and move on.

Great news that the NT days got cut back to 7, even if the QIN may well be fishing those other 7 days. When was that decision made, and what was the reasoning? Did somebody call Region 6 out on the tangle net mortality rate fudging they used to initially allow the NTs 14 days?

Still looks like an awful long October for the sporties. Imagine what it would have looked like had the NTs gotten 14 days... Yikes!

They are definitely not the same regs as last year. Last year you could keep a king out in the harbor for three weeks and this year one week. That lets more get through to the nets. I guess that was the objective. If anything gets by the nets I guess that is what you guys get in the river.

they figure that there will only be about 1,202 hatchery kings and they need 578 for egg take...and only 3,392 totall kings harvestable between hatchery and wild.. not very many.. they need to plant alot more kings!!!

Perhaps....

Actually it was more like 8 somebody's united in solidarity, rejecting a highly speculative 14.7% release mortality on fall chinook released from tangle net gear.

The new and improved NT gillnet schedule is based on a release mortality that's 70% greater than originally proposal!

Essentially the same number of dead paper kings, but now with much more limited ability to fuel as many days of gillnetting with chinook impacts accruing 70% faster.

This fight may not be over. The NT GN advisor vowed to strike back with whatever legal means are available.

Rec advisors argued long and hard to finally make this happen. Let's not as an angling community screw it up for future Satsop seasons. If we treat this opportunity with respect, not only will we have it in the Satsop for years to come, but we can also expand the same chinook "bycatch" philosophy to other waters where hatch kings are encountered... the bay, mainstem Chehalis, etc... whenever wild kings would otherwise be off limits.

As a staunch proponent of the AHFMD philosophy, I firmly believe this is the responsible direction we should be headed.
