Yah--I know--odd time of year to be thinking about this, but what are the advantages of a U-shaped design over a donut? Have been shopping around for a tube for use in smaller, hike-in lakes. Suggestions? Preferences? My eternal thanks for your kind consideration...

I got a Field & Stream model last year for my b-day. It's kinda u-shaped but you sit higher in it than a round one. I didn't fish much last year so I only used it five or six times. Worked great though. I don't know how it compares to other models but it was inexpensive...about $90.00 from Costco. I saw the same one in Bass Pro Shops catalog for $149.00. It's light weight (about 9 lbs.) and comes with a backpack like bag. Takes about 4 min. to inflate. Good luck. Jer

I don't have any suggestions on brands or prices but I can tell you, you will want a U-tube instead of a donut. I have a donut and it is almost impossible to get in and out of in some situations. Like small hike in lakes with steep drop offs or very muddy shallow bottoms. U-boats are much more convenient.

There is no comparison. I have owned both and the u-boat is far superior. First, it is easy to get into and out of. Second, you can kick faster and with less effort because of the reduced drag. Of course if you really want comfort adn speed combined, look into one of the smaller pontoon craft.

Thanks for the advice--looks like I'll be hunting down a U-boat. Field and Stream seems reputable...I know enough to stay away from Caddis...any other hints? Thanks..

Here's my 2 cents. I've got a Wood River Breezerider and have used it a lot. Wood River has had excellent customer service for me and others that I know. One of the velcro parts ripped on the stripping basket of mine and they sent me a new one without any questions. There are several versions of the Wood River U-boats but I would recommend that you get one with built-in zippered pockets, I didn't and regret it. If you need fins you might ask around also. I got some Orvis "flips" but I think that there must be better ones out there.

As far as fins go, I highly recommend the Force Fin, it's expensive, about 90 bucks or so, but worth it. They are lighter and you wear them with neoprene booties, plus they propel you a lot faster..
