Good afternoon: I am new to salmon fishing. I cannot believe I am a native from Washington State and have never landed a salmon! I would like to try fishing from the bank on a river. Would the forum members offer me some suggestions: What river can I try? What lure should I use? Dick Nite? How do I set up my rod? I currently have a 8'6" steelhead rod Shimano medium action What weight of line do I need to use? I have a set of waders and have no problem getting into the water
Thanks for all the information

Rivers: Sky, Snoho, Green, Puyallup
Lure: eggs (my favorite), Dick Nites, Blue Foxes, Mepps Aglia, RVRFSHR spinners, KND spinners, Cleo's or any other high quality spoon...
Set Up: your rod is fine, for drifting eggs, if you can swing it, use Slinky weights, if its not as snaggy, 1/2 ounce cannon balls will work as well... so will good old pencil lead.. 3 foot leader, 1/0 hook, small corkie (try to match the color of the eggs somewhat, you can use other colors, but keep it close, meaning no black corkies with red eggs) i take a 3 inch piece of yarn, and take a small section out of it, and tie it in a knot in the egg loop and let the ends dangle down...
Line weight: 12 pound is fine
(ive put my waders on 1 time this year, you dont "need" them, but bring them with you just in case you want to really get out and away from everyone)

I'm not arguing the fact Redhook is a flosser, moron and spreader of bad and false information, but if I'm going to drift fish i.e. pink worm, yarnie, etc., I generally stay around 3' leader depending on buoyancy. Just what I prefer and think it is more natural and puts me in the zone with what I use more so than a small leader.

SS, well, if you would have helped him first then i wouldnt have had to do it after 100 people looked at it and noone said a damn thing to him... typical crap tho, an older gentlemen asks for help, and you do the typical "go find it yourself" crap and give no help whatsoever to him but some links that you didnt even write... what i told him to do, will get him on fish NOW, not when he figures out if he is doing it correctly, and the run has been over for weeks... oh, and another LOL on you posting those links, then call my sh!t flosser gear, when i am dead in the middle of what those links say to use, you know, the median range im pretty sure my pictures the last few weeks have shown that what i use works.... i havent however, seen anything from you, so you must not fish, and probably shouldnt be telling someone else how to fish when you arent even doing it yourself...

you can definately catch silvers off the bank with no problems all you need is a drift setup like stated earlyer. just run on florocarbon leader it will increase your sucess big time because they wont see your leader comming. oh and its been good this week here goes more. I like how you dry them whole prior to cleaning, filleting and smoking... Nice touch! what kind of cardboard do you find to work best?

WTF... either give him information on how to get him into fish NOW, or STFU... now, not only do you not post pictures, but you dont even give any help, i for sure know you dont fish now.... so what is your purpose here? talk sh!t to me? tell me im wrong? you sayin my dad was wrong too? you saying some of the people i know that have told me over the years what to do are all idiots too? be careful with that last part, you might know a few of them now, to the technical part of it... you make it too complicated, hes never caught a salmon, you need to simplify it and HELP him, not confuse him even more... i can go to the Carbon, hit Kings and Silvers in 2-3 feet deep of water, then, run down to the Puyallup in 4-8 feet of water, and STILL hit Kings and Silvers, on guess what? the same 3 foot leader with small corkie and glob of eggs... i run small hooks, so i run small corkies, its what im confident in, and i catch fish using it, so if its not broke, im not changing it... oh, and FYI, as i have said 100 thousand times, ALL my leaders are 3 feet, i dont change sh!t up when i egg fish (setup wise), if i do change things up (lure wise), spinners, jigs and spoons (all of which i used today as well) then leader length has nothing to do with anything... and i run eggs all the time, ask anyone that knows me, i also catch fish, and you know that... either help the guy, or get off his thread and STFU... rentonhighlands, to get the hang of all this, go to Highway 18 area right now on the Green, and throw eggs, and spinners in size 4 or 5, colors dont really matter a ton right now, but blues, greens/yellow, and pinks will work well... the fish up there are all boots, so unless you dont care about what your fish look like, you wont be bringing anything home, if you dont care much, keep your limit... target the areas just below Soos Creeks mouth, make sure to swing under the brush and in front of it, as well as swinging through the rest of the river, especially with spinners, sometimes they will smack it at shore... in that area, its rocky, the longer you let your lead hang while drifting, the more chance you will have to hang up, so fish your drifts and reel up before its just sitting there in the middle of the river not moving... DO NOT go above the Auburn Black Diamond Rd bridge and fish, it is not open until the 1st of November... if you plan on going, PM me and i will tell you a couple areas you can try in the area that are easy to access, you will or should wear waders in these sections... after the 1st of November, you can either go up and chase them, stay in the same areas and mess around, or go lower in the system and get brighter fish... when i lived in the Highlands, the Green was a main river that i fished, i know quite a few spots that produce... good luck...

If you want to become better at fishing and life in general, read all of nates posts (as painful as that may be) and do exactly the opposite. Do not deter in any way. Even the ranch dressing recipes should not be followed.

You guys don't have to be such douches... if you are going to reply to the thread just help the guy out. There's a reason all the new guys resort to 10' leaders and corkies... and that's because the only people willing to tell them how to "fish" are those who only know corkies/yarn.
Anyways...
If you want to catch some fish I suggest you go buy some twitching jigs and head to the barrier dam on the cowlitz river. There should be a few guys down there twitchin or tossing eggs. Watch some videos on twitching jigs for Coho and do that in the pool right below the dam.
Good luck and report back.
