It all depends on what direction you want to move and what is important to you.

Want to kill and eat salmonids? Need hatcheries
Want to continue to grow the economy, population, etc. ? You need hatcheries
Want to fish non-selectively? Hatcheries
Want to actually restore the salmonid driven ecosystems? Wild fish.

I believe the answer is triage. Some watesheds for wild fish which will mean leaving them pretty much alone. Some watersheds for people to live, work, grow food, etc. in. For these you need hatcheries.

And, if we don't control/reduce the number of humans on this earth hatcheries will be a short-term solution. Extinction will be the long-term solution.

seems a novel idea. we all know moderates just don't generate the interest the extremists do though. that sucks cause this seems the most logical to me.
