I harbor no illusions about the fact that people still fish the Sauk even though it’s closed. However, is it really as obvious as you made out to be? Great pics guys!
Spring fishing on the Sauk happens every year. I don't participate but you just have to go up there in March and April to see it. Are you paying attention WDFW?

Yes it is...Poacher's Season always started in May, and was very successful...now they just get three more months to do it.
I bet if it were acknowledged and measured a lot more fish get bonked by poachers in Feb, March, and April than would get poached and killed by CnR mortality combined if the season were open.
Fish on...
Todd

That's why I've always said the quickest way to kill a river is to close it. Sometimes I wonder if the state wouldn't just rather see all native steelhead gone. That way they could increase both hatchery funding and unfortunately license sales. Opening day on the Pilchuck is Saturday. Probably more fish killed on Superbowl Sunday on the Pil than the Nov-Jan season of c&r season.

Sometimes I wonder if the state wouldn't just rather see all native steelhead gone. That way they could increase both hatchery funding and unfortunately license sales. So true! Speaking of license sales, I think everyone in here would spend over a 100$ on a steelhead tag if it meant rivers were properly managed and enforced. As steelheaders we spend a lot of money on fuel, food, lodging, gear, etc. I never see any enforcement on Puget sound rivers, I see fish checkers and LEO's almost on a daily basis in Idaho? IS it lack of funding as to why there is no enforcement on the Pilchuck and Sauk? It would be hard to beat the Sauk for river structure, scenery, location, and Native Steel anywhere on this planet. Thanks all for posting pics..sure miss Feb/March/April!

Rossiman - You said
"A great river lost once again to mismanagement/overfishing."
Wonder on what you base that statement? From what little I know about wild steelhead and the Skagit/Sauk I don't think the data supports that position; what am I missing?
For more than a decade the estimate of annual wild steelhead fishing impacts (netting, hooking mortality, etc.) for the Skagit has been less than 4%. While the numbers of fish returning to the Skagit/Sauk (as well as the rest of the Salish sea populations) have gone up and down over the decades it appears marine survival is by far the largest driver in those population swings.
Since the mid-1990s the Skagit wild winter steelhead have been one of the most conservatively managed in the state. The escapement goal for that population is 150% of the best estimate of MSY levels with an additional hard cap on total exploitation for runs that might be well above escapement needs.
For me the single best spring season on the Sauk was in 1983. Not only was the fishing outstanding the numbers of exceptional sized fish had to have been experienced to be believed. The basin escapement that spring was almost exactly what was seen in 2013 (30 years later). BTW those escapements were near the best estimate of the average wild steelhead carry capacity for the basin.
The returns in 1983 and 2013 were rebounding from low levels the previous generation. The post 1983 runs continued to improve for most of a decade; have fingers crossed that we will see a similar trend post 2013.
Curt In my original post I had listed "A great river lost once again to mismanagement, overfishing, smolt survival and poaching". For some reason when I was editing misspelled words it disappeared. Thanks for posting that Smalma. I realized Marine survival was low but didn't know how bad it was... What's the estimated survival percentage? Also, the poaching is terrible up there. A guy in my engineering class was bragging about how his buddy caught and killed a 29 pound native on the Sauk in May last year. He was also talking about all the South Fork Stilly fish that get poached by the locals and his neighbors. I'm sure that POS poaches to though he hasn't admitted it yet.

I stopped doing it a couple years ago but used to float the Pilchuck and NF Stilly after it closed. People poaching on every trip I made over a few year span. Plunking out of their backyards or out tossing hardware.

Thanks for bring that up Curt.
OK all you Sauk River lovers, attend OCCUPY SKAGIT, March 29, 2014 at Steelhead Park in Rockport. 9 or 10 AM. Don't forget the Meeting in Olympia that follows the wade in. I'm not 100% on the date so hopefully someone else will know the correct date.
