I'll start: 90% of "yarnie" fishermen are flossers. For the others, cerise, chartreuse and orange seem to work quite well.

Did someone say yarn balls? A bit of information on rigging and color combos here. http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/716009/EZ_Thread_Yarn_Balls.htmlI wind up fishing two color combos most often (pink&white, orange&chart) mainly because I am lazy. Shrimp cocktail probably comes in third and a chart+orange hail mary has saved the day more than a few times.

Flossing, that is a joke. I suppose rags are also used for flossing, it all depends on how you offer it. I have great success with yarnies and never use more then a 24" leader. Any offering with a long leader can be construed as flossing. Your intent dictates the game, not your offering.

The yellowish color, three strands, and one strand of pink or orange works for me. Where bait is allowed, a bit of scent. I also use short leaders, 24-36". Definitely not flossing.

I'll start: 90% of "yarnie" fishermen are flossers. That'd be the corky and yarn crew with there 4-8 foot leaders. Yarnies are used with 18-36 inch leaders... As far as colors go: pinks, whites and shades of orange work well. My favorite color combo is pink/chartreuse for dirtier water and pink/white/orange for clearer water.

Big Hunt -
Check out Coley's thread. He makes a mean yarnie in all of the right colors with internal slider tubes for easy on and off. If you don't have the time, tools or resources for multiple colors, I'd give his product a serious look...

They are also very effective fished under a float. I like to run a piece of shot in the middle of the leader to keep it down but that's all personal preference. Combos of Peach, Pink, Orange and White work well but all kinds of color combos will catch fish.

Bubba Gump Yarnies: We have Drifted yarnies..... Bobber dogged yarnies.... Side drifted yarnies.... Yarnies under an indicator for bug flingers.... Spey yarnies....... Yarnies with bait...... Yarnies with scent....... Yarnies on short leaders...... Oh, and after buying a few dozen of Coley's yarnies, I can now say "screw this" to actually making them myself! At this point, only an idiot would NOT buy yarnies made by Coley.

Oh I'm with ya... I fish yarnies too! Unfortunately the technique has drifted to the "dirty" crowd as well. Been seeing lots and lots of fishermen in terminal fisheries using their "yarnies" to floss fish. Okay, maybe I'll back off to 75% I love em. Especially fished with a shrimp tail or dime size cluster or eggs.

You know you have finally achieved something in life when you have a yarn ball named after you. The Strike Zone is a pretty sweet little number and I've got a few tucked away in my personal stash for a rainy day.

#2 or #4's - Straight to the hook. No need for a bead as you are not going for spin (like with a winged spinner). You just need to get it on there and Coley's internal slip tube allows you do that without a needle. When tying double hook rigs for free drifting from a boat, just slide it between hooks like a standard corkie. Yarnie = corkie. However you rig and fish a corkie, it will be the same with a yarnie.

Oh I'm with ya... I fish yarnies too! Unfortunately the technique has drifted to the "dirty" crowd as well. Been seeing lots and lots of fishermen in terminal fisheries using their "yarnies" to floss fish. Okay, maybe I'll back off to 75% Seems these days ANY GEAR can now be classified as "flossing gear" if a guy has 4'-6' leader it's now flossing gear. why is it that a guy who uses a 24" leader is not a flosser but a guy going 36" is now a flosser? a steelhead that wants a pink/orange yarnie on a 24" leader will equally bite the same yarnie on a 36" or 40" leader. for example a guy is plunking and running a duel rig with spinglos. one leader is 18" and the other is 4' plus. is the 4' leader now a "flossing leader"? how about the new bead craze these days. a guy can run a bead and peg it at 2", catches 4 steelhead in say 3 hours of fishing. are all these steelhead now classified as flossed? I fully understand how eyefish guy reasons his amputated rig to prevent deep hooked gill damage to fish. whether he uses a 4' 6' or 8' leader i'd never reason his kings hooked outside the mouth are "flossed". i'm quite puzzled as how a spoon worked across the river is not labeled as "flossing " these days. I generally float eggs in one particular river in the fall, it's a boulder garden and hard to drift it. I never run a leader longer than 18" because the kings have proven to me they are in no way shy about the inline weight. I've managed to have several kings bury a bobber and found the hook outside the mouth. never considered the king flossed. fish can very widely on how they bite, from a complete open mouth inhale, a lean over and sample to a turn and chase bite. yarnies flat out catch a lot of steelhead! sorry if this is a highjack of the original post.
