Any good videos on how to throw spoons ans spinners in the river for Salmon and Steelhead?

read Bill Herzog's "spoon fishing for Steelhead" book. Hardware is a serious addiction once you become efficient at it. no better time to learn than on summer runs too!

I thought I taught you better than reading a book on how to's... Tie it on, chuck it, keep it barley off the bottom and hold on!

Be it brass or feathers, the swing is the thing.


On brass...

Keep it thumping at the prime rate
Keep it close to the bottom
KEEP MOVING....no mailboxes !

Sleep in, let the early risers stir up the river. Let the water warm a degree or two then throw some flash at them.

Keep it close but not on bottom, start with short casts and lengthen, step and repeat. As mentioned above, don't stand in one spot for long. They will wack it on the firsts or second good presentation. Don't wade out past your shoe tops if necessary. They will follow a spoon along ways, plus you might spook those high water june fish that like to lay close to the bank.

2/5oz is a good place to start depending on depth and speed of current

Thanks for the great advise! I am a pretty good tosser myself! Been doing it for 50 years.
BUT, I was looking for a good video I could get that shows the whole process in the river so I can play it at the lodge on a loop for clients.

May just have to make my own.

In the gentler current of the Situk, Tacos (Bleu Fox) would work fine.
In heavier current they're not so good.

Biggest mistake that I notice are the winter "Corkie Culture" guys standing in one spot flogging away with hardware.
Once you swing through, you've cleared that area of players...step down.

I was probably leaning towards spinners more than spoons.
Just trying to give the clients with little expertise something to start their trip off right so they don't loose 2 days trying to figure it out!

I've been using size 1 on my #4 Frenchies with very good reults.

We are going on year 4 using this as our provided hook with spoons and spinners...best hook I've used so far on hardware.

The big items that I would try to teach is the importance of keeping the spinner down and how to maintain optimum blade RPM.
Not easy for the n00b to master but once they do, it's game on.

Even if they can't do those things efficiently, some aggressive fish will charge up to engage the whirling intruder.
