I have been considering flying to Anchorage in mid August and then driving to Homer to fish the Anchor for Silvers. I would just go for a long weekend, adding a couple of days of vacation to a Saturday and Sunday. If anyone is familiar with this fishery I have some questions.

1. Is this a combat fishery with no elbow room?
2. How productive is the Silver run?
3. If it is total combat fishing can anyone suggest a place for silvers in Alaska without spending massive dollars on a fly-out lodge. I did that last year and I don’t think my better half will allow me to drop another 5 grand on fishing this summer ?

I sincerely hope I am not asking too much and surely do not expect anyone to give away any hard won (and undoubtedly expensively obtained) secrets.

Well, i can see the Anchor from my kitchen window:-)
Once in awhile when the kings are in(starting this weekend) the fishing is elbow to elbow in the best holes, but most of the time later in the season when the silvers and steelhead are in, you can expect company, but it's by no means combat fishing. There's a pretty solid run of fish, and the best fishing is within an hour or two before and after high tide(salmon fishing is restricted to the lower two or three miles of the river near the ocean.) Drifting eggs with litttle or no weight is a pretty sure bet. Purple woolly buggers are an old standby, and probably the most used fly for silvers on the anchor. Down in the mouth, and in the salt along the beach, spinners like #5 mepps and vibrax work well, along with eggs under a bobber. If the Anchor doesn't work, there's two other rivers within twenty miles that have good runs also, and there's a hatchery stocked run close also.
If you have any more questions about guides, charters, lodging etc..... My e-mail is dib82@hotmail.com

David's advice is pretty much right on ... although I'd have to say that the numbers of silvers in most of the KP streams don't come close at all to what we have seen on the OP streams the past few years. You will however, find them to be better biting, although smaller than WA fish, especially when it comes to the eggs. Have fun!!
