My kids have expressed an interest in going out to the range for some target practice for a while now. Long gone are the days of just driving up to the dirt pits out of Sultan. Now, if it's not on a range, it's not at all. We finally had a weekend day open and made the best of it.

First step in taking any youngster out to the range for the first time was all the in-house gun safety we went over for weeks. Making sure they have a good set of eyes/ears is also critical.

Once at the range, a quick introduction to the range rules and their rules was mandatory. They did extremely well in following all the rules, if not better than most of the "adults" out there.

Started them out with a Ruger 10/22 .22 LR and a basic red dot type site at 25 yards.

Alex wanted to go first and it didn't take him long to understand why shooting is so much fun and rewarding.

His older sister was right behind him and not one to back down from any type of challenge.

After a few rounds to get each of them warmed up to the proper way of tucking in a rifle, acquiring a sight picture, tucking in the rifle, and finally squeezing the trigger, it was time for a little sibling competition!

A couple of notes on this photo. The Ruger was a brand new, never fired rifle. I did a very quick, down and dirty, sight in job on the sight and rifle while the kids watched and patiently waited. I let them shoot with a rifle and optic that would work - but would probably not hit a fleas ass at 25 yards. Next time I go to the range, I'll have to dead zero sight it in. Also, Katie is left eyes but right handed. So, while she wanted to shoot right handed, her eye kept messing with her, so I had her shoot left handed. The first batch of bullets she shot all landed in the upper right corner. She shot all of these with her left eye open and right eye closed. Her next batch of bullets all crept down to the lower left corner. I found out that she was shooting with both eyes open for this round of shooting - which would explain the wildness of what you see in the photo.

In the end though, I think she did out shoot her brother....especially if she would have kept her right eye closed. We will work on that.

The kids wanted nothing to do with the .223 and .308 zombie guns when I was sighting them in without the suppressor. They didn't like the nose and the AAC adapter/flash suppressor probably didn't help with the noise. Once I had both rifles sighted in at 200 yards with the suppressor attached and they both saw/heard that the noise level was damn near gone, they both wanted to shoot the bigger rifles!

Who am I to say no to that?

Again, Alex was up first. Probably went 75% on hitting the 200 yard metal clanger with his first 20 rounds. He loved it.

Again, the older sister would not be outdone. She was a dead eye with this rifle - A stock Sig Sauer R516 .223 with an unmagnified Red Dot on it.

(I kept having to lift up the barrel off of the block and rest the gun on the floating forearm grip and not the barrel.)

I was quite impressed at her ability to shoot. Must take after her old man. Here, just watch the video and listen to her shots thump the clanger. By the time I was catching on, I only got her last 4 in a row. I bet she hit the clanger 18 out of 20 rounds. All the adults at the range were highly impressed and amused at my two kids blasting suppressed zombie guns. wink

If you were curious about how "quiet" these suppressed weapons are, here's a great video. You can hear the <BOOM's> of the other unsuppressed AR's shooting to the right of Katie. The only thing you hear out of Katie's rifle is the super sonic crack of a bullet. Most of the other nose is highly reduced or "suppressed". After a while, the noises coming off of the unsuppressed rifles was highly annoying. Kind of wish there were more "quiet" shooters out there. Makes for a more enjoyable experience, that's for sure.

Didn't get a video of Alex blasting away with the .223, but at one point, he really did want to take a shot with the Armalite AR-10 in .308. Again, who am I to say no.

He did almost great........ Don't think this overly traumatized him, but I think as kids, we've all done this. Once. wink

Fun stuff Parker. But how in the heck did you acquire .22 LR? I've only scored on 3 boxes of 50 since January. Plinking ammo is still in seriously short supply around here.

I am curious how well the suppressor works but can't view the videos. Is there a link you can post?

There is a certain giggle factor to suppressors. It is increased when you use subsonic ammo.

Figured my .22 can needed a new pistol. New to the collection!

Finally put some sub 9mm rounds through this can. Quiet enough to use without ears. Very fun. thumbs

Now, I need to get a threaded Kimber .45 ACP barrel.......

thumbs
